“ | Jason Lannister had assembled a formidable host in the western hills; a thousand armored knights, and seven times as many archers and men-at-arms. Let him descend from the high ground and cross the Red Fork with fire and sword, whilst Ser Criston Cole marched forth from King's Landing, accompanied by Prince Aemond himself on Vhagar. Lord Jason Lannister is a supporting character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and a supporting antagonist in the television adaptation House of the Dragon.
He was the Lord of Casterly Rock, the Shield of Lannisport, the Warden of the West, and the head of House Lannister during the reigns of Kings Viserys I Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen. He is also the older twin brother Ser Tyland Lannister, the husband of Lady Johanna Westerling and the father of five trueborn daughters, including Cerelle and Tyshara, one trueborn son and heir named Loreon, and several unnamed bastard daughters. He is also a relative to Ser Erwin Lannister.
In House of the Dragon, he is portrayed by Jefferson Hall, who also portrays his twin brother.
Appearance[]
Like Ser Tyland, Jason is a tall and dashing man with golden-blonde hair, but in House of the Dragon, he is also given a blonde bushy beard.
Biography[]
Jason Lannister was born together with his twin brother Tyland between 89-97 AC as twins.
In 112 AC, when Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the firstborn child and daughter of the now-King Viserys I Targaryen, visited the Westerlands in her youth, Lord Jason and Ser Tyland tried to vie for her hand by showering her with gifts but were unsuccessful.
Dance of the Dragons[]
Many years later in 129 AC, at the start of the Dance of the Dragons, Lord Jason chose to support King Aegon II Targaryen and his political party, the Greens, against his half-sister Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as a result of his brother Ser Tyland's favored position as King Aegon's Master of Coin and his close association with the Iron Throne. Jason assembled a powerful army consisting of a thousand knights and seven thousand archers and men-at-arms to counter Rhaenyra's supporters, the Blacks.
Late during the civil war, due to the threat perceived from Rhaenyra's husband Prince Daemon Targaryen and his assembled host of Rivermen, as the Riverlands pledged their support to Rhaenyra, Prince Aemond Targaryen intended to defeat his uncle and the Riverlords and plans to strike the Riverlands from both the east and the west. In accordance with his plan, Aemond has Lord Jason and his army cross the Red Fork while Ser Criston Cole, the Hand of the King to Aegon II, would lead the Greens army to the Riverlands.
As Jason had taken most of House Lannister's strength with him to the Riverlands, this left the Westerlands lightly defended, allowing Lord Dalton Greyjoy, the Red Kraken, and theironborn, who supported Rhaenyra, to descend on and raid the lightly-defended Westerlands, destroying the Lannister fleet and sacking the city of Lannisport in the process. The ironborn seized hundreds of women, including Lord Jason's favorite mistress and his natural daughters.
Death[]
In the Battle at the Red Fork, Jason Lannister and his forces tried to cross one of the fords of the Red Fork, but despite outnumbering the Rivermen, they failed to cross over, as they were pushed back three times, as the forces of the Riverlands had successfully put up heavy resistance, forcing Jason and his army to turn back. During the third attack, Jason was mortally wounded in battle by the squire Pate of Longleaf, who would then be knighted by Lord Petyr Piper, one of the many Riverlords supporting the Blacks, and Pate would come to be dubbed as Longleaf the Lionslayer.
As Jason slowly died from his wounds, Ser Adrian Tarbeck, a knight from House Tarbeck, took command of the Westermen and successfully shattered the Riverlords' host, ultimately destroying their resistance. The battle at the Red Fork ended in victory for the Greens, but at the cost of Lord Jason Lannister, who died not long after. With his death, back in the Westerlands, Casterly Rock, the ancestral seat of the Lannisters, was left in disarray. Jason’s son Loreon succeeded him as the new lord of Casterly Rock, but as the boy was only four years old at that time, his mother, Lady Johanna Lannister, ruled as regent in her son's stead until he would reach the age of manhood. With the main army of the Westerlands fighting in the Riverlands, the ironborn continued to raid the Westerlands, and it fell to Johanna to defend her homeland against the Red Kraken's forces.
Trivia[]
- The identity and name of Jason and Tyland's father was not disclosed. Their father could've been Lord Tymond Lannister, who supported Prince Viserys Targaryen in his claim to the Iron Throne as the successor of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. However, this was never confirmed, and Tymond could've been their uncle or a cousin, who died without living trueborn issue.
- In the television series House of the Dragon, Jason and Tyland's mother is named Lady Ceira Lannister. They also have a male relative named Brett Lannister.
- In addition to his role as Jason Lannister, the character's actor, Jefferson Hall, also portrays his twin Ser Tyland Lannister in House of the Dragon.
- Prior to his two roles in this series, Jefferson Hall also starred in Game of Thrones as Ser Hugh of the Vale, a knight of the Vale and a former squire to Lord Jon Arryn, who rebelled against House Targaryen during Robert's Rebellion and later became the Hand of the King to King Robert I Baratheon. As such, Hugh was aged up a lot in the show, compared to the novels, where Ser Hugh is only a young boy around his late teens.
- In House of the Dragon, Jason is shown to include two caged male lions as a part of his army, which was never mentioned in the novels. This is due to the fact that in the books, lions are now really rare in Westeros, unlike in Essos, as many lions in the Westerlands were hunted to near extinction. Casterly Rock is confirmed to keep lions, as shown by the fact that the twins Cersei and Jaime used to watch them when they were children, but they don't use them in war.
