This is your last mission, Sonya.
~ Jax, as he's preparing to kill Sonya Blade.

Jackson "Jax" Briggs, is a deuteragonist in the Mortal Kombat franchise of fighting games, and a minor antagonist on Mortal Kombat (2011) and Mortal Kombat X. As he was killed by Sindel in the Earthrealm Invasion, he was resurrected as a Revenant by Quan Chi. He was then reverted back to life when Raiden reversed Quan Chi's spell.

He was voiced by Marz Timms in Mortal Kombat (2011), (who also voiced Reptile in the same game) Greg Eagles in Mortal Kombat X, (who also voiced Baraka in the same game, Gray Fox in Metal Gear Solid, Grim in The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, The Sandman in The Powerpuff Girls and Lobo in the web series of the same name) and by William Christopher Stephens in Mortal Kombat 11.

History[]

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

Jax was a part of Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn's tournament. He was later seen with two cybernetic arms after losing it to Ermac in the Soul Chamber during Shao Kahn's tournament. After defeating the Cyber Lin Kuei, he and others faced Sindel. Jax was then killed as Sindel pierced his throat with her heels. After Sindel was defeated by Nightwolf, he and everyone else who was killed were then resurrected as Revenants by Quan Chi. Jax and the others were later defeated by Raiden.

Mortal Kombat X[]

After the death of Shao Kahn and the Earthrealm invasion, Shinnok and his followers went on a mission to invade Earthrealm. During the Netherrealm War Jax took part in the assault of the Jinsei Chamber. Him and Smoke were confronted by Sonya, Johnny Cage, and Kenshi while guarding a group of captured Shaolin monks. Jax managed to beat Sonya down, but was stopped by Johnny before he was able to finish her. He was ultimately defeated by Johnny, who assured his former ally he would "fix him someday."

Jax spent the next five years as a Revenant, firmly under Quan Chi's control. Jax was seen with Smoke and other wraiths. As they spotted the special forces, Jax fought Sonya and had the upper hand. Johnny Cage intervened after Jax attempted to kill Sonya. After Jax was defeated, the rest of the wraiths retreated. Jax was later defending Quan Chi alongside with Sub Zero and Scorpion as he was planning to turn Johnny Cage into a Revenant. After he and others alongside him were defeated, Raiden managed to reverse the spell, finally bringing Jax and others back to life.

Comics[]

As seen in flashback, the revenant Jax and Smoke held down Cyber Sub-Zero, so that Quan Chi could remake him into a human revenant.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

After being freed from Quan Chi's corruption as a Revenant, Jax retires from the Special Forces and spent the rest of his life in solitude after grieving the death of his wife, Vera. Kronika then appears before him, supposedly promising him a better future where Jacqui never joined the Special Forces and Jax making a peaceful retirement.

As the young Jax and Jacqui went to the abandoned Shang Tsung's island to obtain Kronika's crown, the present Jax confronted them, now made with Kronika's design, explaining his dismay in his life as a revenant, Vera, Jacqui's enlistment as a soldier and how he never meant to be her father, wanting Kronika to undone all the tragedies that happened to him despite the young Jax's protest and Jacqui's reason. The present Jax then pleads the two to hand over the crown without harming anyone, ending up with the younger Jax and present Jax in a fight, ultimately leading to the latter's defeat at the hands of the former. The two brought the unconscious present Jax to escape the island, only to be interrupted by Cetrion who demands both the crown and the present Jax in exchange for either Jax or Jacqui's life.

Later on during the Earthrealm and Outerrealm united front against Kronika and the Netherrealm, Jax arrived to fight Raiden in the Sea of Blood, claiming that he was forced to fight for the sake of his future and his daughter. After being defeated by Raiden, it was revealed to Jax that Kronika is the mother of Shinnok and Cetrion, the latter who was also responsible for his tragedies, revealing that Kronika's true intention was to revive Shinnok to balance Cetrion's light. After a harrowing experience of guilt and remorse, Jax lambasted himself for his foolishness, but Raiden ensures that he is doing the right thing for his family, to which Jax apologized for his actions and joins side with the Earthrealmers.

Appearances[]

His Revenant counterpart on Mortal Kombat (2011) is seen with very a desaturated skin with flesh wounds and glowing white eyes. On Mortal Kombat X, his skin has yellow vein patterns and his eyes are glowing yellow. His cybernetic arms also glow yellow and red and they seem to have more spike on the arm. On Mortal Kombat 11, he also has a revenant skin where his skin is completely grey and he has red glowing cracked patterns on his skin and his eyes are glowing red.

Personality[]

Completely opposite of what the real Jackson Briggs is, being protective and caring, his revenant counterpart is completely cruel, heartless, and completely brainwashed.

After being freed as a Revenant, Jax retained many of his former personality. Additionally, he is portrayed as a protective family man, who would do anything to yearn for a better life for his daughter, such as preventing her from ever enlisting in the Special Forces, although he was being manipulated by Kronika. In the end, he felt remorse and self-deprecation for believing Kronika's lies even though he is still a caring father.
