Jax is one of the five deuteragonists of The Amazing Digital Circus web series created by Glitch Productions.

Like the other characters, he was a human who was transported into the world of the Digital Circus with the avatar of an anthropomorphic purple cartoon rabbit after finding a VR headset connected to the world, possibly attaching itself to him.

In contrast to his peers, who are good people that are either disturbed or solemnly accepting of their new life at the circus, Jax is an apathetic jerk, sadistic prankster and overall, a sociopathic thrill-seeker who torments everyone and wants to cause chaos for his personal entertainment.

He was voiced by Michael Kovach, who also voiced N in Murder Drones, Rocky Rickaby in Lackadaisy, the Prototype in Project Playtime, Diligence in The Gaslight District, and Cakks in Pain Girl.

Appearance[]

With a design reminiscent of 1930s animations, such as Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry, Jax is a purple rabbit with a slim figure, lanky limbs, large feet, and a wide, oval head. He wears bright pink overalls and yellow gloves. On top of his head lies two comically long rabbit ears, with his constantly grinning teeth and the irises of his eyes being the same shade of sickly yellow as his gloves. With the exception of his overalls and the aforementioned eyes and teeth.

Personality[]

In contrast to his peers, who have either been driven mad (Pomni, Kinger), are apathetic (Zooble), or solemnly accepting (Ragatha, Gangle) of their new life in the Digital Circus, Jax is an arrogant, abusive, violent, remorseless, vituperative, selfish, and somewhat of a mean-spirited hedonist who embraces his new circumstances, relishing in how he is free to be as a egoistical and conniving as possible with his mischief without any sort of repercussions, thus making him an overall sociopath. Additionally, he is also quite sadistic, hoping for bloodshed and death to occur during Caine's adventures and being upset when they don't. This thirst for violence had led to him committing deeds of a nefariously lethal variety, such as trying to blow up the truck of the Syrup Bandits with Pomni still on it and opening the gate to the Candy Kingdom so the Fudge can lay waste to its denizens. Interestingly, Jax doesn't believe himself to be that bad of a person in spite of this; When Ragatha gets into an argument with him after he accidentally hits Gangle with a baseball, he defends himself by saying, "You always treat me like a bad guy. I'm not really a bad guy".

Notably, Jax is the most active participant of Caine's challenges and seems to be the savviest at navigating the Digital Circus, having the key to Pomni's room before she arrived. He also takes up a leadership role in adventures, ordering the group to split up to search for Gloinks and ordering Gangle to give him a weapon to attack the Syrup Bandits under the threat of blackmail. Despite this, he seems to have little care for his fellow circus mates, tormenting them whenever he can and not even showing up to Kaufmo's "funeral" after his abstraction (it's not helping that his monotone voice and writing "I don't care" as his Spudsy's nametag just symbolizes his general lack of caring).

However, despite his abusive behavior and egotism, Jax doesn't seem to be truly heartless, as he is shown to be upset while watching the abstracted Kaufmo be put in the cellar by Caine and briefly looks sad upon hearing that Zooble arranged a funeral for Kaufmo before quickly brushing it off, hinting that there’s a slight chance he cares for the other players, but chooses to hide it. It's implied he may have been closer to Kaufmo than the others, since he apparently trusted him enough to loan him his bowling ball. Furthermore, Jax's previous action of kicking Kinger and Gangle down the Gloink lair before entering himself to hide from an abstracted Kaufmo imply that he may genuinely care for the welfare of the other players but simply chooses to express it in an annoying and frustrating way so nobody observes him because he fears they will overreact.

It also seems like Jax only acts this way in the Circus because there are no consequences, much like a troll playing a video game. This might imply that Jax wasn't always this way and years in the Circus has gotten to him, the karma Jax sometimes receives for his criminally mischievous behavior (e.g getting choked by Zooble and Martha Mildenhall getting him tied up) only helps showing doses of this.

It's hinted Jax has insecurity of being vulnerable around others; despite briefly feeling sad, he refuses to attend Kaufmo's funeral and when about to be "reevaluated" by Gangle, his first concern is asking if anybody else could see him like this. Likewise, despite being utterly exhausted from his day at Spudsy's, he refused to show a sincere frown in front of the others and only let his exhaustion show when he left the establishment and was alone.

In contrast to his incredibly rude and blunt behaviors, Jax is capable of showing some moments of decency with the other circus members, hanging out with them while watching Pomni hold her breath and later playing baseball with Ragatha and Gangle, even sincerely admitting that breaking the latter's mask was an accident rather than laughing at her, which also proves that if he doesn't intend to harm anyone, he won't take joy out of their misfortunes. He's even shown to be capable of holding friendly conversations with Pomni, much to her shock (albeit after being exhausted from all the work and tortured by Gangle) and later converses with her and Kinger. It's even suggested that his cruel personality might actually be his coping mechanism rather than who he truly is (or rather always was) as a person, as demonstrated when he's forced to drop his usual antagonism of the other players during the adventure at Spudsy's.

Biography[]

Prior to the events of the series, Jax was transported into the world of the Amazing Digital Circus at some point before Pomni arrived. Quickly becoming content living in a world where consequences and repercussions don't exist, Jax made it his personal hobby to torment the other members of the Amazing Digital Circus and cause as much chaos as possible to fuel his sadism, specifically targeting Ragatha due to finding messing with her the most fun and Gangle due to her submissive nature and inability to stand up for herself making her the perfect punching bag.

Pilot[]

Caine, is this one of your NPCs or is this a new sucker? 'Cause if it's a new character, we're gonna have to redo this whole theme song.
~ Jax's first lines.

After Pomni arrives in the Amazing Digital Circus, Jax finds her anxiety about the situation to be amusing and decides to mess with her, using Kinger's insanity about the situation he is in as a way to mess with her head and taking pleasure from her believing the experience to just be a bad dream. Jax then steps over Gangle's comedy mask and asks Caine about what the latest adventure will be for Pomni, but Caine tells him he would like to show her around the circus before any adventures occur. After Pomni returns, she makes a comment about an exit door she believed to see, but Jax quickly dismisses it, saying that if there really was an exit door, they would have all escaped by now.

When Zooble is taken by Gloinks, Jax is apathetic to the situation and just simply asks the others if they want to get something to eat, subsequently suggesting Pomni has a jump start in losing her mind after Kinger mentions that Kaufmo had also spoke of an exit, while continuing to show amusement at her believing she is only dreaming. He then decides to travel to Kaufmo's room in the circus with Pomni and Ragatha after ordering Kinger and Gangle to deal with getting Zooble back, something which Ragatha is concerned about due to their mental instability but Jax brushes it off and simply travels to Kaufmo's room.

Jax: By the way, I may have left something in your room today, so let me know if you find it. You're not afraid of centipedes, are you?
Ragatha: JAX! That's literally my only fear, WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!
Jax: Whaaaat? It could be a completely unrelated question, you never know until it's too late.
~ Jax to Ragatha, after being questioned about having a key to Kaufmo's room.

When Kaufmo doesn't open the door to his room, Jax reveals that he has a key to the room so he can unlock it, something which Ragatha is concerned with since Jax shouldn't have keys to anyone's room but his own. Jax reveals that he has keys to multiple places inside the circus and they have all been fine so far, later adding that he left a centipede in Ragatha's room, aware that she has a fear of centipedes to torment her. After unlocking the door to Kaufmo's room, Kaufmo is revealed to have gone insane and abstracted, something that horrifies everyone but Jax quickly thanks Kaufmo for keeping a bowling ball he had been searching for safe before leaving the two to fend off the abstracted Kaufmo by themselves.

Jax runs into Gangle and Kinger, who both notice a hole in the floor where they believe Zooble was taken. Kinger then greets Jax and Gangle questions on if Kaufmo is still mad with her for not laughing at his jokes, which Jax simply responds with "oh he's doing great. In fact, I don't think I've seen him this happy before". Hearing Kaufmo's distant footsteps, Jax knocks Kinger down the hole by throwing the bowling ball at him who subsequently takes Gangle down with him before Jax leaps down the hole himself. After a brief moment of silence, the trio come face to face with the Gloink Queen, to which Jax disrespects her, saying that he wished she asked for his consent before looking at something as disgusting as her appearance.

Zooble then asks for help after the Gloinks take her towards the Gloink Queen to be eaten, but Jax is apathetic once again, stating he doesn't want to help Zooble because of her rude comment about calling them idiots. Zooble's head is eaten by the Gloink Queen but Jax remains calm, believing that she will survive the encounter. He then insults the Gloink Queen yet again by calling her dumb and weird, then stating he is not interested in the adventure and is just trying to hide from Kaufmo. Kaufmo then crashes through the floor into the lair and Jax reveals that he knew about Kaufmo being abstracted and simply tells Gangle to "not worry about it".

I guess it just goes to show that you can't trust Kinger for anything.
~ Jax mocking Kinger when Kaufmo abstracted.

After Zooble's head is spat out by the Gloink Queen, the four escape through an escalator and reunite with Caine, who then imprisons Kaufmo in a special prison designed for all the abstracted humans. They all then have a feast as a reward granted by Caine for defeating the Gloink Queen and the episode ends.

Candy Carrier Chaos![]

The next day, the group embark on a new adventure that is about stopping a group of thieves who stole a syrup tanker from a kingdom that is made up of candy people. Jax is initially disinterested but becomes ecstatic when he realizes this is an opportunity to cause chaos and enthusiastically jumps into the "war rig" that is a truck but is disappointed when the horn for the truck is goofy and has a very distorted sounding horn, telling Gangle to drive instead. When the group locates the thieves, Jax tells Gangle that once they get close enough, he will leap outside the truck, crawl into the driver's seat and shoot the thieves until they are unrecognizable. Gangle believes it is immoral, but Jax just simply demands her to keep driving.

Jax then throws Pomni out of the truck and forces her to create a bridge between the two trucks for him to walk across. He then finds a bazooka in the truck and attempts to walk on Pomni to reach the enemy truck, but Pomni loses grip and the bridge breaks. Jax then demands for Gangle to get closer to the trucks after they are separated by a rocky road, even going as far as to ask her to ram the truck off the road despite Pomni still being on it. Jax then blackmails Gangle into doing it after threatening to tell Ragatha about "the figurine thing" and Gangle complies. However, the group is unable to ram them again due to the thieves deploying defensive spikes on the side of their truck and the group then fall into a canyon after Kinger throws an anchor that had a rope in the truck attached to it.

I blame you for this.
~ Jax putting the blame on Gangle for the van falling in the chocolate river in "Candy Carrier Chaos!".

The group then come face to face with The Fudge, who Jax takes a liking to after the Fudge reveals he previously murdered the townsfolk at the Candy Kingdom by eating them. Jax decides to make a deal with the Fudge, if he aids them with capturing the thieves, Jax will unlock the gates to the Candy Kingdom so the Fudge can eat its population. However, two of the thieves interrupt their conversation before the Fudge can accept the deal, but the Fudge still takes both the heroes and the thieves back to the kingdom anyway. Jax is disappointed with the anti-climax of the adventure, wishing there was a big final battle to go along with it, or at least death and chaos, but it all ended with nothing noteworthy. Jax was also seen shooting down Ragatha's attempts to cheer him up.

I'm so unbelievably disappointed right now.
~ Jax about the outcome of the adventure in Episode 2.

After the group arrive back to the kingdom, Jax reveals he left the front gate to the kingdom unlocked after hearing a distant explosion, the impending death of the townsfolk (including Princess Loolilalu) invigorating him before running through a portal with the others to leave the townsfolk to be devoured by the Fudge. The group then hold a funeral for Kaufmo, Jax briefly looks saddened upon hearing about it before quickly looking like he's annoyed and returns off to his room instead.

The Mystery Of Mildenhall Manor[]

I wanna keep the mystery alive! What do YOU, the viewers, think it is?
~ Jax after being asked what happens when he holds his breath in Episode 3.

Sometime later, Jax and the others are having a breath holding competition with Pomni, eager to find out what happens when she does so since all of them have unique effects. When questioned about his reluctance to hold his breath, Jax insists that he's just trying to intensify a sense of mystery over what he can do (which Zooble saw him as a "coward" for this evasive response alone). Suddenly, Caine arrives and sends them on an adventure to Mildenhall Manor, where they are supposed to interact with the supernatural spirits living there. At the manor, Jax torments Pomni after learning that she's susceptible to jump scares. The humans arrive at a room where a ghost named Ghostly manifests, introducing himself as their guide only for Jax to suck him up with a vacuum cleaner. The humans are offered two doors to go through: one leading to a tame, scare-free adventure, and another one leading to a scary one. Jax rips off Gangle's comedy mask and chucks it at a wall, revealing a gigantic maw leading to an alternate path. Kinger jumps in to grab Gangle's mask back, accidentally dragging Pomni along as he was trying to fit her eyes back in when they popped out at seeing Ghostly.

The trio continues on the safe route. They meet the lady of the manor, Baroness Mildenhall (who seemingly tied up Jax after he tried to suck her up as well), who reveals that the scary route Kinger and Pomni are on is inhabited by her husband and accidental murderer Baron Mildenhall, who she warns is incredibly dramatic and stuck-up. After having a tea party with the Baroness, the trio leave back to the entrance hall to await their friends. After some time, Pomni and Kinger emerge from a secret passageway, upon which the former thanks Ragatha for always looking out for her, having realized she hasn't shown much appreciation. Thus, the humans leave back to the Circus, where Jax is disturbed (and also disgusted) by Caine calling them "meowing milkmaids". Noticing Kinger going back into his pillow fort, Jax mocks Pomni by asking her how her time with Kinger was and calling Kinger "the nutcase", to which she admits that he's actually rather nice, disappointing Jax.

Fast Food Masquerade[]

Jax starts this episode off playing baseball with Ragatha and Gangle. He hits the baseball and breaks Gangle's comedy mask; for once, Jax admits it was actually accidental and he didn't mean to do that, arguing with Ragatha over it. Later, Jax, Ragatha and Pomni observe Zooble giving Gangle a new happy mask, with Jax breaking the 4th wall by referencing Pomni's unicorn horn from the comics. Caine arrives and decides to send the gang to Spudsy's after a suggestion for fast food work as an adventure, much to Jax's annoyance, which is made worse by the fact Gangle is now the manager.

After arriving at Spudsy's and dumping Ragatha in the deep fryer just to spite Gangle, Jax is threatened by Gangle, who calls Caine and gets the latter to promise punishment to anyone who gives a "poor performance", horrifying Jax. After noticing Orbsman at the register and complaining he hates him, Jax goes and converses with Zooble, shocked they're actually doing the job. Zooble admits they don't want to be punished by Caine but Jax argues that Caine won't do anything to malicious because it's not in his nature. Jax is seen annoyed at the clock once Gangle tells everyone to get their game faces on, and then Jax is seen working at the drive thru, and was shocked by the arrival of the Gloink Queen, asking if she counts as a "bus" for her mere existence. Later, he refused to clean the bathroom and told Gangle that he likes her better when she's sad, leading to him being taken away into a dark room. Jax is forced to watch a video made by Gangle, being unnerved after he’s finally released. Jax complains about noticing how little time has moved by, telling Gangle the clock is broken. As Gangle goes on a rant on finding normalcy and finding peace and achieving dreams, her watch beeps and she notices Jax is right; the clock is indeed broken.

Jax: How you doin'?
Pomni: Everything's been- I'm doing fine...
Jax: [sighs] Wish I could say the same...
Gangle: Jax! There's dishes back here! You got time to lean, you got time to clean!
Jax: Ugh, god... I'm on it! Later, Pomni.
~ Jax, burnt out from working at Spudsy's, actually manages to have a cordial conversation with Pomni, much to her surprise.

Jax gets more and more annoyed with how slow time is moving by. He even starts to stop acting like a jerk, stepping over a high Ragatha rather than on her despite her admitting she hates Jax (but doesn't want him to hate her) and conversed with Pomni in a friendly manner, much to her shock. Eventually, Jax is relieved to finally be released from his shift, being the first to clock out and heading to his car, putting his head down out of exhaustion. Later, Jax is show conversing with Pomni and Kinger, seemingly getting along with the other circus members for once.

Villainous Acts[]

  • Throwing a bowling ball at Kinger, causing him and Gangle to fall in episode 1 (although this did save them from Kaufmo).
  • Wanting to shoot the gator bandits repeatedly until they're "unrecognizable" in episode 2.
    • He also deliberately endangered Pomni by throwing her out of a truck in a violent and aggressive fashion, forcing Pomni to cling onto both trucks with her elastic arms, which Jax intended to make her a bridge so he could kill these bandits, and wanted Gangle to ram the truck she was driving into the truck the bandits were in.
  • Threatening Ragatha by saying he'd let the Fudge eat her if she doesn't stop talking.
  • Unleashing the Fudge onto all of the Candy Canyon Kingdom residents, which would presumably lead to death of thousands of innocent people in said kingdom.
    • Even if the world possibly stops existing when the circus member's leave, he still attempted to get the candy people devoured for a sick thrill of getting everyone in the kingdom murdered, and while he did honor his deal with the Fudge, this was mostly due to his own sadism rather than genuine honor.
  • Throwing Ragatha in the deep fryer and leaves her there for about a minute in episode 4. Not to mention insulting Gangle by saying she's better sad, which was one of the contributions that almost led to Gangle's abstraction had Pomni not stepped in.

Trivia[]

  • At 22 years old, Jax is the youngest member of the Circus, with Zooble being only six months older than him.
  • As stated by his voice actor Michael Kovach, Jax was meant to originally have a softer voice akin to Raggedy Andy's, but thanks to it being too sincere for his egotistical personality, Jax was given a more tough and vulgar tone instead.
  • At the end of episode 2, Jax's hand is noticeably the only one not seen grabbing Pomni's hand at the end when she envisions all the other character's saving her. It's unknown if this implies Jax never befriending Pomni and only getting worse from then on or if Pomni simply doesn't consider Jax a friend at the time due to his behavior.
  • Gooseworx has stated that she personally finds Jax to be her favorite character, as well as the character she relates to the most. Ironically enough, almost nobody in the circus likes Jax and it's been outright stated that no one deserves to be trapped there more than him.
    • Despite this, Gooseworx has stated that Jax's behavior stems from an unseen broken past, stating "everyone has a reason for why they act the way they do" and "Jax is a troubled character. You'll learn all about him someday."
    • Likewise, when asked if there's anything Jax wouldn't do, Gooseworx confirmed that "There are a few lines he won't cross".
  • Seeing as he occasionally talks directly to the audience, Jax is the only character other than Caine who's implied to be self-aware in the series. It's also possible that he just does this to unnerve his fellow captives and isn't actually self-aware.
    • Jax's violent and sadistic nature may also be related to the fact that he's the member of the group who's the most aware of the fact that he's in a game and as such, treats all of its denizens cruelly thanks to acknowledging that nobody is hurt (mostly) at the end and none of them can truly die.
  • Jax never opens his mouth, even when talking. The only times he's done so is when Zooble strangles him in the pilot and when he laughs after scaring Pomni in "The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor".
  • A minor controversy surrounding Jax's character was that he was much more malevolent in episode 2 than in episode 1 (and later episode 3 as well), with fans complaining that Jax had turned from a lovable scamp into a sociopathic monster. This claim is invalid, as Jax didn't have as many chances to cause trouble in episode 1 or 3 (the latter due to being tied up) than he did in episode 2, and more than likely would have if presented the opportunity.
    • In response to said controversy, Gooseworx would go on to imply that Jax would continue to get worse as the show progressed. However, Gooseworx has admitted that she's prone to lying for fun at times, so it's possible this was simply her just jerking the fanbase around.
  • Jax was initially planned to be female before being gender-swapped with Pomni.
  • Unlike the other humans, Jax's room isn't displayed on the background of his character pin, implying that it's a spoiler for a future episode.
    • Interestingly, the background for said pin displays his door with rips showing the Void, which could have some curious implications. However, Gooseworx did state we would later get to see inside of Jax's room.
    • Following the implication that Caine may have mixed up the humans and NPCs at one point, Jax has popularly been theorized to be a rogue NPC. This is because, not only is Jax's behavior markedly different from the rest of the cast, being hedonistic and cruel, he also seems weirdly knowledgable about the Circus, allegedly possessing keys to all parts of it.
      • His refusal to demonstrate what happens when he holds his breath only added more fuel to the fire, with some theorizing that nothing happens since he's an NPC.
      • However, this theory was debunked by Gooseworx on her tumblr page, implying that Jax only acts the way he does to annoy everybody and presumably hides things for that exact same reason. Gooseworx has admitted that she sometimes posts red herrings though, making this uncertain.
      • It was also specified in the Netflix description of The Amazing Digital Circus that Pomni is trapped in the circus with "Five other humans", with one being Jax. Gooseworx later said Jax and the others are "human souls trapped in the circus as well."
    • As a result of this theory being debunked, it's been theorized alternatively that Jax may be an admin or a hacker that got trapped in the Circus, hence why he has so much more control over it than his peers via the keys. It's also been theorized that Jax keeps his side-effect of breath-holding secret as it either does nothing or he's already holding his breath constantly seeing as his mouth, his only breathing apparatus, almost never opens.
  • Jax appears as the deuteragonist (alongside Caine) of the production comics for The Amazing Digital Circus, where it's revealed that he's a wealthy mechanophiliac with an empty, miserable life. This is non-canon.
    • In these same production comics, he also threatens to kill Pomni for, as stated by himself, "no reason". While this hasn't been shown in the official show, this is certainly something he would do.
    • Jax may be aware of these comics, as he references Pomni having a unicorn horn in Fast Food Masquerade, which was also in the comics.
  • As revealed by Gooseworx, Jax was the one who came up with Gangle’s name.
    • This most likely means that Jax has been in the circus longer than Gangle has, making him the 3rd longest member who's been there after Ragatha and Kinger.
  • Fitting with his chaotic nature, Jax's favorite website is 4chan.
  • It's heavily implied Jax has some sort of traumatic past relating to being on a farm, specifically with corn, which even Gooseworx has alluded to. This is implied by;
    • Jax is said to be afraid of corn, to which Gooseworx responded that it reminds him of the farm.
    • His voice actor, Michael Kovach, confirmed that Jax would internally die if he got surrounded by corn.
    • When asked about what Jax has in his overall pocket, Gooseworx claims that he has mulch, a material applied to the surface of soil, and is commonly used in gardening and agriculture.
    • During the 2024 Glitch X, Jax revealed to Uzi Doorman that one of his worst nightmare's was getting "lost in a corn maze once".
  • In the 2023 Glitch X, Gooseworx confirmed Jax's design is based off Popee Paraphone's, who's work inspired the creation of the show, with Jax likewise a sociopathic rabbit character. When asked if Jax was similar to him, Gooseworx responded, "Kinda? He's a hugely impulsive d--kwad but he has a little more depth than Popee that is explored way later down the line."
  • According to Gooseworx, Jax has, tried to remove his overalls several times. Emphasis on the word "tried", as it's implied that all circus members whose avatars sport clothes are unable to remove them.
  • He has a design, name, and personality similar to Max from Sam and Max. Like many references in the series, Sam and Max was most popular in the 1990s, the time period where The Amazing Digital Circus is lightly implied to take place.
