Joe is a patient in the webcomic Awful Hospital, and one of the few grey-zoners.
Biography[]
Jay has been a patient in this hospital for a long time, presumably longer than Fern. He saw so many of his fellow grey-zoners leave after a shorter treatment time, he was soured by how long he was forced to stay here without getting better or being discharged.
Overall, he's an antisocial lone wolf, a complete jerk, a loose cannon, and flat-out psychotic at times. He is still a skilled survivalist, moving around the hospital and killing his targets proficiently without getting caught or stopped by anyone. By the time Fern meets him, he already has a considerable mass grave hidden from where any hospital staff could see it.
In addition, depending on the situation, Jay can turn into a Slob at times. When this happens, he usually gets certain Slob abilities, as well as looking deformed and behaving in a more savage and uncontrolled way. Interestingly, even after he is brought back to his human body, he has an injury that he did not have before and retains his slob abilities, though he does not know this, as his memories from his Slob form are not clear to him. This happens quickly after Jay meets Fern for the first time, after Jay eats the brains of a hospital worker whom he himself killed.
In addition, while this power does offer immediate damage, it also infects him more and more into truly becoming a Slob and shortening the threshold to become a Slob again. Interestingly, one Jayslob, which has a large, bulging eye that seems large enough to be his head, does not associate with the human whose body became him, and lacks his memories or violent and malicious tendencies. This Jayslob was dubbed Eyeslob by fans before being given the official name of Isaac.
At one point, Crash shatters Jay's entire skeleton to transform him into a large Slob known as Final Jayslob. Crash does this to prevent Fern from putting Jay's core in stasis. Final Jayslob is a more powerful form of Jay than has been seen before, but he is defeated. After this defeat, Jay's core gets sent to replace Chip's core, thereby turning him into Joe and giving him a position under Flair. It is unclear if he has any memories of who he was before this incident.
