It's time for the next generation!
~ Jean-Clawed to Wild Knuckles after he and the other villains betray him.
We're coming for you, Tiny Man!
~ Jean-Clawed after Gru stole the Zodiac Stone

Jean-Clawed is one of the four secondary antagonists (alongside Svengeance, Nun-Chuck, and Stronghold) of Illumination's 12th feature film, Minions The Rise of Gru, a prequel of the Despicable Me franchise. He is a French supervillain who has a mechanical giant lobster arm and is a member of the villainous team, the Vicious 6.

He was voiced by Jean-Claude Van Damme, who also played Jean Vilain in The Expendables 2, Ivan Kraschinsky in No Retreat, No Surrender, Luc Deveraux in the Universal Soldier series, and Edward Garrotte in Replicant.

Appearance[]

Jean-Clawed is a thin, middle-aged man with black hair and a beard, wearing a black-striped white shirt, black pants, and a bowler hat. His most striking feature is his red mechanical crab claw which replaces his right arm.

During the final battle of the film, the Vicious 6 use the power of the Zodiac stone to transform themselves into giant animals, with Jean-Clawed taking the form of a giant monkey with blue skin, yellow eyes, and gold and brown fur. He also keeps his bowler hat and mechanical arm, which now has longer spikes and seems to be much larger.

Biography[]

He first appeared celebrating after Bottom successfully retrieved the map to the Zodiac Stone. He next appeared with the rest of the villains in Asia as they betrayed Wild Knuckles. He took it upon himself to cut the rope that was holding the villain, causing him to fall to his supposed demise.

He and the other villains next appeared in their lair during Gru's interview. He commented on how he thought Gru was a tiny man, and asked what was wrong with him. He and the other villains joined in on a laugh while made fun of Gru. When the villain Wind Man came in to try out, his jetpack machine malfunctioned, and so he and the other male villains held back as she lassoed him down. Gru took this time while they were distracted to steal the stone, causing them all to go after him. He and Nun-Chuck were the second people to spot him after he escaped the store. They both pursued, and after Stronghold accidentally hit the nun with a car, he instead pursued with. He held onto a chain she used to latch on to Gru's bike, and when Gru used his rocked, Jean tried to use his claw hand to land it, but instead the chain broke.

He and the other villains were next seen all getting into their own individual vehicles that they would use to pursue Gru. His vehicle appeared to be a giant crab-like mech. They used their vehicles to arrive at Gru's house, where they were met with Gru's mother. After further interrogation, Jean grabbed one of the minions with his claw and forced them to talk. He learned about how Wild Knuckle was still alive and how Gru was with him.

They all appeared again in San Francisco while invading Wild Knuckles home with their machines. Jean-Clawed was one of the first to break in with his crab machine. He made it to the top of the home with his machine where he announced that Gru and Wild Knuckles weren't there. After finding nothing, he and the other vacated. They eventually found Gru at the Chinese New Year festival that was taking place that night. After capturing Gru, they took the stone, but at the same time were confronted with the Anti-Villain League. Belle Bottom handed Gru off to Jean-Clawed just as the clock stuck twelve. Once it did, it embedded herself and the other villains to use the gem's power. Jean turned into an monkey-like creature with his mechanical claw while the others turned into their respective beasts. They all reconvened when Wild Knuckles appeared.

They prepared to fight, Jean-Clawed going after the Minion that had been turned into a goat. While being chased, the Minion was hit by Stronghold. The goat soon came back and used his "Inner Beast" abilities to attack the two. After being punched, Jean-Clawed had saw Otto going to save Gru, and so he captured the Minion with his claw. After this, Gru slammed the clock tower's hand into his head, causing him to fall. As he lay in agony, ordered everyone to destroy Gru, and so they all prepared to pounce. Just then, all the Minions used their abilities to create a force to push them all back, allowing Gru to grab the stone. Once he did, he turned them all into rats. In the end, they were all arrested.

He is now elderly in the present.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Giant Claw Arm - As his name suggests, Jean-Clawed possesses a giant red crab-claw in place of his right arm. This claw he possesses is capable of giving Jean super-human strength, as seen when he was able to use his claw to dig into concrete. Jean often uses this arm more than he does his regular arm.
  • Monkey Physiology: When using the power of the Zodiac Stone, Jean was transformed into a giant monkey that still possessed his claw-arm. As a giant monkey, Jean gained a handful of abilities.
    • Superhuman Agility - As a giant monkey, Jean possessed super-human agility. He was able to jump to the top of a three-story tower with only one leap.
    • Superhuman Durability: Jean was able to survive both a huge blow to the gut, but also falling off a three-story building into a pit of fire after being hit over the head with a large piece of steel.

Trivia[]

  • Jean-Clawed's name is a possible reference to his voice actor.
  • Jean-Clawed was able to understand the minion's French.
  • Even after it was revealed Gru was just a kid, he still refers to him as "Tiny Man."
  • Many fans had assumed that his robotic arm was a prosthetic which was used because they had presumed he was missing one of his arms. However, when he is turned into a rat,it is shown that he actually has both of his arms and the robotic one seems to serve as more of a power enchancement then anything else. It could have been an goof.
