Writing this, I look at the men in what remains of the encampment. With each breath of Zhidkov's, a swarm of flies briefly stirs, disturbed by the movement of his rotting flesh. Ivakin's flesh has begun to split as the tumors begin to erupt from within. Even those few who have escaped with body fully intact have had their nerves utterly shattered. Toropov stares at the sun all day. Saltykov insists that he is merely a gear in some infernal machine.

But, alas! I can feel that the battle is coming to an end. With the end of the battle is the end of useful data. The thing will likely make its exit soon, and I must make myself scarce before then.

But still, to think that I have done in a few weeks what it took the butchers of Europe three years to do! I have not felt such hope for mankind since the days of First Republic.

Each night, it gives me much heart to hear as they cry out in their sleep, unable to escape the madness that surrounds them even in slumber.

Although this represents only a first step, I have looked into the eyes of men as they were broken by the unremitting and incomprehensible carnage around them. The screams and moans of the men form a continuous chorus that sings the correctness of my path.

I will lead these humans to peace, no matter the cost.
~ Dr. Durand's journal entry in "Smothering Dreams".
Take the shovel. And dig until I say otherwise. Unless you would rather I shoot you in the jaw first. I have heard that it is extremely painful.
~ Dr. Nemeş ordering a soldier in "A Burial In The Woods".
The Central Powers were no longer abiding by laws they did not set. Neither laws of war nor laws of nature were followed - a pact with the devil must have been forged. How else could they make such wicked weapons? Gas which would drive men mad with endless, nonexistent fire. Grenades which scorched the earth unlike anything else the world had ever seen. Guns which could disfigure men beyond recognition within seconds. Such was overlooked as the manic cries of broken madmen, until the horrors followed the stories home.
~ Excerpt from "Win Condition".

Jean Durand and Mátyás Nemeş are recurring antagonists in the SCP Foundation mythos. They are a duo of nonhuman scientists both responsible for the creation of horrific anomalies like the abandoned battlefield of the Battle of Husiatyn Woods in which their still active weaponry and living corpses of soldiers are scattered around. In actuality, they seek to help humanity in ending all wars and establish worldwide peace, but the means they seek to use to achieve this are highly destructive, with Durand seeking to cause a war so horrible to show humanity the horrors of wars and make them stop fighting, while Nemeş seeking to conquer the entire world to forcefully bring peace upon the human race.

History[]

Almost nothing is known about the individual known Jean Durand, but what is known is that he wasn't actually human, but an inhuman creature either of cryptid or alien origin possibly wearing the skin of someone else. Blending in human society, appearing as a French scientist working for the Académie des sciences, he admired the race but was distraught that the humans had been plagued by war. Because of this, he became determined to use his inventions to prevent any future war and bring an eternal peace. However, because he thought different from normal humans, the means he took to reach his goal was highly extreme as Durand believed that if he caused a war horrible enough humans would come to their senses.

During the American Revolutionary War, Durand was contacted via mail by John Toliver for assistance in the war. Seeing an opportunity to end a conflict Durand eagerly accepted, and learning of an ill Virginian officer who had fought in the battle of Monongahela named George Washington he believed him to be the perfect subject to host his latest combat machine to fight for freedom. Instructing the American officers to cover up Washington's death, preserve his body and send it to him in France, Durand revived Washington into a powerful android that could fight against the British Army. Durand then had a woman named Martha "marry" Washington in order to always accompany him and secretly maintain his inner mechanisms since Washington was unaware of his modifications.

Durand then took part in the Battle of Inkerman fought between the allied armies of Britain and France against the Imperial Russian Army. He supplied the allied forces with his weaponry, but from the carnage his creations caused, a creature arose sharing the same intellect as Durand. This beast-like monster went to live in Hungary where he became known as Mátyás Nemeş and like Durand he thought highly of humans and wished to establish peace but believed that the only way to accomplish it was to conquer all of humanity.

Durand once met with esteemed British explorer Lord Blackwood. However, despite Durand appearing to see Blackwood as a friend, the latter was left disturbed by the destruction the former was willing to bring in the name of peace.

As World War I began raging on, Durand and Nemeş were called to assist their respective sides, Durand going to help the Russian forces and Nemeş helping the Germans. It is speculated that before Durand went to assist the Russian soldiers, he created SCP-172 to be a servant for the House of Romanov. Durand would introduce himself to the confused small army out of nowhere, and convinced the soldiers to accept his weapons to fight against the Germans in a forest near Husiatyn, Ukraine. Meanwhile, Nemeş quickly rose through the ranks, meeting Franz Joseph I who appointed him as a lieutenant for the army that was going to fight Durand's. Both scientists supplied their respective sides advanced and dangerous weapons, resulting in the two armies massacring each other and causing mass suffering to both sides. Witnessing this horrible event, Durand reveled in the misery he was causing, believing it to be a necessary step to peace, while Nemeş only cared about winning the battle.

With the battle going on, the two became aware of each other's involvement. Nemeş would try to persuade Durand to come to his cause, but the latter refused, dismissing the former as a beast whose means at achieving peace were inferior to his own. The battle eventually came to a close after most of the soldiers had perished in the battlefield and the remaining ones deserted, prompting Durand to move on with his goal of causing as much destruction as possible. Nemeş, on the other hand, lingered for a bit more in the battle-ridden ground, going after the surviving soldiers and either finishing them off or burying them alive, just like he did with Lars and Feliks.

Their current whereabouts are completely unknown, if they're even still active. Inventor Vincent Anderson would find some of Durand's schematics during his trip in Europe in the 90s, inspiring him to form Anderson Robotics.

During the destructive attack of the Scarlet King and his army on the universe, Durand and Nemeş' weapons contributed to the war as they destroyed Flander's Fields. It is unknown what happened to the weapons following the defeat of the Scarlet King at the hands of Isabel Wondertainment.

Appearance[]

Durand appeared as a normal human male of French origin, but is possible that it isn't his actual real appearance.

Nemeş also appeared at first as a normal man of Hungarian origin, having neat hair and mustache, two different colored eyes, a blue and grey one, and wearing a blue uniform of an Austro-Hungarian officer. After the Battle of Husiatyn Woods, Nemeş had stitches running from his left ear to his chin, his right arm had been shredded a bit and his clothes were dirtied. His voice was in a thick Hungarian accent but as he spoke his speech would devolve into growling until outright barking like the true beast he was.

Powers and Abilities[]

Both Durand and Nemeş were brilliant and genius scientists capable of creating a variety of anomalous armaments. These included various weaponry that mutated people, made them immortal just to suffer eternally, and chemicals that destroyed minds.

In addition to this, they could speak numerous languages, with Durand speaking Russian, French, English and an unknown language resembling the Indus script, and Nemeş speaking Hungarian and German. Thanks to their inhuman physiology, Durand and Nemeş appeared to be immortal as Durand participated in the American Revolutionary War and the First World War and Nemeş could heal from half of his head missing. Nemeş also possessed enhanced strength as he could lift an entire grown man with one arm.

Personalities[]

Durand, being possibly a non-human creature, didn't think the same way as other humans. Seeing that humanity was plagued by conflicts Durand made his purpose in life to rid the race of all wars and bring a new age of peace. However, Durand believed that the only way to make humans stop warring between each other was to cause a massive destructive war so horrible to traumatize humanity. He believed in freedom and was willing to help the side he deemed righteous, but his main priority was create as much suffering and misery as possible, even shading tears of joy after witnessing the soldiers he was helping loose all hope and committing suicide.

Nemeş, like Durand, also wished to bring peace upon humanity, but unlike Durand, he believed this could only be achieved through conquest. He didn't seem to care if he caused suffering or not, creating powerful weapons to conquer all of humanity and force peace on the human race. Nemeş also appeared to have a twisted view on honor, preventing any still living soldier he came across from leaving the battlefield, and killing them himself to honor the oath of dying valiantly in the battle or forcing them to assist him in burying wounded soldiers before finishing them off. Despite his geniality, Nemeş would devolve into a mindless beast that growled and barked at anyone he encountered.

Trivia[]

  • The name "Jean Durand" is analogous to John Doe in French as Jean is a French cognate of "John", while "Monsieur Durand" is a French variant of an homme de la rue (man in the street) which is a term used to designate an average person.
  • During the "Creck Fection Contest 2 (TWO DAY EXTRAVAGANZA!)", one of titles the authors could use to write a crack fiction tale was "nemes + durand vacation in belgium", but no one wrote a tale about it.
  • In MLZ-1730 in which the contained anomalies and Foundation personnel switched places, with the anomalies taking the role of Foundation personnel known as the "Man Zoo League" and containing normal people in their "Man Zoo", the duo became employees of the MZL Department of Pain and Suffering who picked the brain of Foundation employee Carlos Kalinin.
  • The image used of Durand and Nemeş in MZL-1730, is actually a photograph of Lieutenant Read and John O. Auston inspecting the scalped body of hunter Ralph Morrison.
  • Durand and Nemeş first debuted in SCP-186 which used to be about a disturbing abandoned battlefield with anomalous weapons and still living corpses where they conducted their experiments. Their original author, Kalinin, deleted SCP-186 along most of their work, but the characters are still present in tales written by other authors.
    • The original version of SCP-186 was referenced in SCP-███ (SCP-5356) as WWI-era munitions being preserved alongside Kalinin's other deleted works by the Department of Abnormalities.
