~ Alex to Jed before deciding to either forgive or condemn him. |
Jedediah "Jed" Lucan is the main antagonist of the 2021 video game Life is Strange: True Colors. He is the bartender at the Black Lantern in Haven Springs, as well as the father of Ryan Lucan.
Biography[]
Background[]
Twelve years ago, while working as a miner, Jed led an expedition that proved to be unsafe, but he urged everyone to keep working. During the dig, the mine started flooding due to a pipe burst, leaving seven men trapped. Rather than save them or die with them, Jed chose to save himself with the other survivors, leaving those seven to die. Plagued with guilt and remorse over his actions, he made a deal with the rogue mining company Typhon, which made him into a hero for saving the lives of the other miners and covered up the deaths of the other seven left behind.
Life is Strange: True Colors[]
By the events of the present storyline, Jed runs the Black Lantern bar and restaurant with Gabe Chen, his son's best friend, working there. When Gabe invites his sister Alex to live with him in Haven Springs, Jed meets her and takes a liking to her, even offering her a job at the Black Lantern if she successfully completes a shift during "Side A".
After the death of Gabe Chen due to Typhon setting off charges for a secret operation, Jed hosts a wake for Gabe at the Black Lantern. The wake quickly goes south when a guilt-ridden Ryan and a paranoid Mac argue with each other over which one was responsible for Gabe's death, forcing Alex to hide in the upstairs apartment due to their strong negative emotions taking a toll on her. Once she comes back down determined to solve the mystery behind Gabe's death, Jed offers Alex her own copy of the keys to the bar and the apartment, making it her home.
Later that night, Jed reconvenes everyone to the town's bridge for a proper send-off for Gabe by lighting a sky lantern dedicated to Gabe. He is one of many to watch it fly off feeling joy from Gabe's memory.
Jed later participates in the town-wide LARP that Steph Gingrich put together to help cheer up Ethan after Gabe's death, first playing the role of the noble King Tambor before appearing as the 'final boss' (which depending on player choice is either Stormwrither or Cravius). Jed later appears that night with everyone at the Spring Festival enjoying themselves.
After the festival (and after Alex is released from jail), Jed talks with her at the bar asking what is going on and how he can help. Alex divulges everything about her investigation into Typhon and their role in Gabe's death, revealing the existence of Project RHEA, which was using the first explosion that killed Gabe to cover up a second explosion to bury something else. Jed tells her he knows what is being buried and takes her to the second location. As Alex looks down the mine shaft, she feels Jed's aura suddenly become sad as she hears him pulling out a gun. Jed reveals he made a mistake several years ago and, to cover it up, made a deal with Typhon. Jed says he never wanted Gabe to get hurt, angering Alex who charges at him before he shoots her, sending her falling down the mine shaft.
The next morning, Jed and Diane are meeting with the town council at the Black Lantern to vote on the approval of Typhon's expansion, but is shocked when Alex comes in bloodied and injured, but still very much alive. Alex begins telling everyone the truth about Jed and how he left seven miners (including her father) to die and worked with Typhon to cover it up. Diane and Jed will try to silence her while Steph instantly backs Alex up; everyone else's reactions, including Ryan's, will vary by the choices the player made up to that point. Regardless of who does or does not believe Alex, she will use her power to dig deep into Jed's mind, chipping away at the hero facade he built for himself, revealing he loathes himself for what he did and constantly feels guilt and remorse but buries it out of fear of losing respect from his son and the rest of the town. Alex may choose to either forgive or condemn him, but regardless of what she chooses, Jed will break down in tears and confess to his past sins.
A radio announcement reveals he turned himself into the police and is currently in custody awaiting trial. If Alex chose to forgive Jed, he will have left her a note in her apartment thanking her, saying that while he did not deserve her forgiveness, it meant more to him than she'll know, and says he hopes her father's bomber jacket will offer some token of peace for the harm he caused her.
Trivia[]
- Prior to his villainous reveal, there were several moments foreshadowing Jed's true role:
- In Typhon's files on the town council, Jed was labeled as someone who would easily work with them on the upcoming vote, indirectly referencing the deal they made to cover up his secret.
- When Diane Jacobs' USB stick containing evidence of Typhon's shady actions goes missing, Jed becomes proactive in finding it. Though it appears as him just being a friendly neighbor, it really hints at his ulterior motives.
- During the town-wide LARP, Jed first appears playing the role of the noble King Tambor before being revealed as the LARP's final boss (Stormwrither or Carvius), which is exactly how Jed first appears as a helpful guide and father figure to Alex before being revealed as the game's villain.
- After the LARP, if Alex observes the fake crown in the Black Lantern, Alex will comment that it was fun to watch Jed play the villain. Ironically, he ends up being the game's villain.
