Jeff is the main antagonist of the 2024 novel Letters From a Concussed Girl. He is an abusive drug smuggler who had the father of Sylvie Peters killed in a car accident so he could abuse and torment his wife; Arabella Peters.

Biography[]

Past[]

According to Sylvie's Aunt Opal, Jeff first met Arabella around the time Opal began a "fling" with a friend of Jeff's named Ricky. While Ricky and Opal's relationship wasn't very serious, Arabella fell deeply in love with Jeff. However, both Jeff and Ricky were involved in very bad business, presumably related to the same drug affairs he deals with later in the novel.

Eventually, after Opal and Arabella fled from Jeff and Ricky and built a new life for themselves, Arabella met Stevie, and she fell in love with him and the two got married. Unfortunately, after Ricky discovered Arabella's location and informed it to Jeff, he was able to introduce himself to Stevie and manipulate him into becoming a close friend of Stevie's, and it was through this "friendship" that he was able to get in contact with Arabella.

After being informed of Stevie's gambling debt, Jeff offered to pay the debt off, only to later use his resources to have Stevie killed in a car accident, resulting in the crushing debt being passed on to Arabella and her daughter Sylvie. Jeff would then reveal his true nature as a cold and sociopathic abuser, and would continuously charge interest on the remaining members of the Peters' family, allowing him to live in their house and force Arabella to work multiple jobs in order to have her pay him back.

Present[]

Jeff is seen at multiple moments throughout the events of the book, mainly through moments of him abusing Arabella and Sylvie. He continuously implies that Sylvie can come with him to his buddies to help pay off the debt if the mother cannot pick up the place, implying potentially the intent to have Sylvie work dangerous or carnal jobs, which would always horrify Arabella and cause her to beg him for more time.

In one chapter, as Jeff reveals to Arabella that he was the one responsible for Stevie's death, she has a mental breakdown.

Throughout the novel, Sylvie is constantly trying to save up some money for herself and her mother so they can try and run away from Jeff, although due to the fishing hook infection she receives while camping as part of Eleanor's bucket-list, she unfortunately dies before being able to leave with her mother. With her dying words, she encourages her mother to be brave enough to run away from Jeff, telling her exactly where her stash of money is hidden, before passing away.

Legacy[]

It is unknown if Jeff continues his search for Arabella post-Sylvie's death, as Arabella followed her daughter's dying wish and fled with the money she had made to her sister Opal in order to hide from Jeff, although even if he did try and find her, it is implied that he would never be able to succeed, as Opal has managed to evade Jeff's notice for several years.
