~ Bragg's suicide letter |
Jefferson Bragg is one of the two overarching antagonist of the horror video game Until Dawn (alongside the Makkapitew) and the overarching antagonist of its prequel The Inpatient. He was a businessman who owned and operated of the Blackwood Sanatorium, as well as established the North West Mines and the Blackwood Pines Hotel.
He was voiced by the late Bruce Gray and modeled on Simon Bond.
Biography[]
Background[]
Jefferson Bragg was born in 1881 and quickly became a successful businessman by establishing the North West mines in the Blackwood Mountain after surveyors discovered an abundance of tin and radium beneath the surface of the mountain. The success of Bragg's mining operation led him to expand and diversify his business portfolio. The mine was soon followed by the discovery of hot springs in the mountain, which led him to establish the luxurious Blackwood Pines Hotel and a Sanatorium resort in 1922.
In December 1951, Jefferson's downfall began as a part of the mines collapsed due to his neglect of its state, trapping 30 miners. On the 5th of January 1952, the 12 surviving miners were found and brought to the sanatorium for medical care. However, it quickly became obvious to the doctors that something was wrong with the survivors as they had developed immense strength, were very aggressive and did not show any sign of malnutrition, despite having been trapped underground for a month. Eventually, Bragg and the doctors figured out that the miners ate their colleagues to survive and they began experimenting on them to understand their physical changes.
The press quickly got involved, as they relentlessly tried to interview the miners, one particular journalist named Chuck Bernstein was even assaulted by a security guard. Chuck then tried to sneak into the sanatorium and witnessed the experiments but eventually got caught and experimented on by Bragg. He began brainwashing the journalist with electroshocks and drugs to make him forget what he saw.
The miners began changing into Wendigos with one of them escaping and killing a nurse. This murder was covered up by Bragg.
The Inpatient[]
Jefferson Bragg is seen in the opening scene of the game, entering the room of the restrained journalist. He interrogates the player and asks if he remembers who Bragg is, and if he knows why he is in the Sanatorium. Bragg mentions the patient has trouble with his memory and encourages him to visualize the last thing the player can remember. A flashback occurs of the patient receiving electric shocks in a small cell. Bragg will ask the player for further clarification and if he remembers the flashback correctly, Bragg notes to a doctor that progress has been made. After asking for further details of the memory, he will then ask what year it is. When the player answers, he is then asked, for a third time, to focus on the flashback. Following this, Bragg notes that the patient does not need to be pushed further. He claims he wants what is best for him, remarking that remarkable progress has been made today. He then injects the player with a substance through a syringe, causing the patient to pass out, stating that he will be brought to his room. He then asks a doctor to pose as the patient's roommate in order to watch him and confirm that he didn't remember the experiments.
Things came to a head on the 24th of February 1952 when all the Wendigos escaped and killed most of the staff and patients, safe for the player and his roommate, a nurse, an orderly, the sanatorium's priest and Bragg himself. After a few days, the player eventually escaped his cell and discovered the massacre. He eventually met up with the survivors inside of Bragg's office. While the group was planning an escape, Bragg interrupted them, saying that he will stay, claiming that he belongs to the sanatorium. After an argument, the group leaves Jefferson in his office as he looks at a poison bottle.
In the end, the whole thing was covered up by the police who shot survivors out of fear of the Wendigos. The sanatorium was thus closed and abandoned with Jefferson's dead body left to rot in his office.
Until Dawn[]
63 years later, while in pursuit of the Stranger, Mike makes it to the Blackwood Sanatorium. There, he can come across clues related to the Sanatorium's operation which mention Bragg and his involvement with it. Upon his return to the site later that night, Mike can come across Bragg's corpse and a suicide note in the hidden study of his office.
Personality[]
Jefferson Bragg appears to be a greedy and manipulative man, falsifying the mine's inspection in order to keep his profitable operation running. He also doesn't seem to value human life as he experiments on the miners after the mine cave in, and on the journalist after he saw too much.
He only seems to show remorse when he has to face the consequences of his actions, refusing to help the survivors escape and locking himself in his office to kill himself.
Appearance[]
Bragg is an old man with gray balding hair and shaven gray facial hair. He wears round glasses and sports a red and white plaid bow tie and a stethoscope around his neck. He wears a deep blue tuxedo with a yellow vest, a white shirt and black shoes.
