NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Jeffrey Dahmer from the anthology series Monster. The real-life counterpart can be found here: Jeffrey Dahmer.

I want to hear your heart ’cause I’m gonna eat it.
~ Dahmer to Tracy as he prepares to kill him.
Your Honor, it is over now. This has never been a case of trying to get free. I didn't ever want freedom. Frankly, I wanted death for myself. This was a case to tell the world that I did what I did, not for reasons of hate. I hated no one. I knew I was sick or evil or both. Now I believe I was sick. The doctors have told me about my sickness, and now I have some peace. I know how much harm I've caused, and I tried to do the best I could after the arrest to make amends, but no matter what I did, I could not undo the terrible harm I've caused. My attempt to help identify the remains was the best that I could do. And that was hardly anything. I feel so bad for what I did to those poor families, and I understand their rightful anger. I know I will be in prison for the rest of my life.
~ Jeffrey's remorseful statement before he is sentenced to life in prison.

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, is the titular main protagonist of the 2022 Netflix biographical crime thriller Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, the first season in the anthology series, Monster.

He is a cannibalistic serial killer who raped, murdered, and dismembered 17 men and boys between 1978-1991, before preserving their skeletal and organ structure.

He was portrayed by Evan Peters, who also played several villains in the American Horror Story franchise - Tate Langdon in Murder House, James Patrick March in Hotel, Kai Anderson in Cult, Jeff Pfister in Apocalypse, and Austin Sommers in Double Feature - and Julian Dillinger in Tron: Ares.

Personality[]

From a young age, Jeffrey Dahmer was a quiet, reserved and socially withdrawn person. He never tried to socialize or make friends, barely talked unless he was spoken to, and showed no interest in school. He is later revealed to be highly disturbed, having a passion for dissecting and torturing animals. He even showed an intense sexual attraction towards blood, gore and body parts. As a teenager, he acted in an outlandish and inappropriate way in school, including photobombing a group photo for his school yearbook for no discernible reason. When he discovered he was gay, he developed a deep sense of self-loathing, as at the time homosexuality was considered sinful. When his parents divorced and left him home alone for the summer, the situation got worse and he became a depressed alcoholic.

Dahmer had a disturbing desire to control and dominate men he deemed attractive by using them as mindless sex slaves to keep for himself. At the age of eighteen he would snap and kill a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks because he refused him to stay with him. It was after this murder that Jeffrey's homicidal tendencies surfaced although he would suppress them for nine years he would finally give into them and began a four year killing spree murdering, mutilating and even eating the remains of his victims even minors such as Konerak Sinthasomphone were not safe from his machinations. Jeffrey also enjoyed disturbing his victims and expressed a form of dominance over them. Despite many presuming him to be insane this isn't entirely true, Jeffrey shows full awareness and shame in the depravity of his actions, not being motivated by hatred or malice but just obsession and loneliness stemming from his childhood neglect. Although he tried to stop himself several times and just lead a normal life, he simply could not let go of his urges showing himself to be highly conflicted person.

Dahmer also proved himself to be very manipulative often pathologically lying to cover up his crimes even putting on a façade and made people think he was a normal average man with only a select few such as as his neighbor, Glenda Cleveland being able to see through this. Whenever things don't go his way Jeffrey's calm demeanor would break and he would becoming verbally aggressive and unstable to those in his way.

Eventually when Jeffrey was finally caught he utterly broke down and expressed heavy remorse for his actions and was even glad that he was caught as he feared he would just continue to hurt people. Dahmer was so shameful of his actions he that he actually became suicidal and wanted the death penalty for himself as punishment. Dahmer even shamefully apologized to his victims loved ones for what he had done despite knowing he doesn't deserve forgiveness and will never attain it. During his time in prison he began to turn to Christianity as a way to absolve his sins which briefly worked however the other inmates such as Christopher Scarver believed his remorse was fake thus he was beaten to death by Scarver, however Dahmer showed no objection to his fate knowing it was what he deserved. The true reason why Jeffrey became the sick monster he did is to this day unknown, whether it was because of his bad upbringing, a mental disorder, or he was just driven by a disturbed obsession although it's considered to be all three.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

Jeffrey Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Lionel and Joyce Dahmer. Growing up his father was emotionally distant and somewhat neglectful due to being busy with his medical studies. His mother was a mentally ill drug addict who was often greedy for attention and sympathy. Dahmer's parents genuinely loved him, but were too wrapped up in their own problems to pay much attention to him or his younger brother David. Jeffrey's parents also had frequent, violent arguments in front of him. At the age of three, Dahmer underwent a hernia operation, after which he became withdrawn and uncommunicative, and began exhibiting antisocial behavior. One day a six year old Jeffrey collected tadpoles and gave them to his teacher, but after seeing the teacher give them away to another student, Dahmer snuck into his house and killed the tadpoles by pouring motor oil in the jar. He also collected and dissected roadkill in his spare time, this hobby was further encouraged by his father as it was the only thing they could bond over.

Upon hitting puberty, Dahmer discovered that he was gay, which filled him with guilt and shame because he had been raised to believe that homosexuality was sinful. Over time, his sexuality fused with fantasies of violence, including necrophilia; he became obsessed with having total control of the dead bodies of young, beautiful men. He drank heavily to numb his self-hatred, and started acting out in school for attention, throwing loud, angry fits that his classmates called "doing a Dahmer".

Eventually, when Dahmer was 17, his parents divorced, with his father going on a three month vacation to clear his mind and his mother abandoning him and taking his younger brother. During the summer, Dahmer would watch television and drink heavily while fantasizing about having a companion at his house to quell his loneliness.

First Murder[]

Dahmer commits his first murder three weeks after graduating from high school, on June 18, 1978. Dahmer picks up a hitchhiker named Steven Mark Hicks, who is almost 19 years old. Dahmer lures him to his house on the pretext of drinking. Hicks, who had been hitchhiking to a rock concert at Chippewa Lake Park, Ohio, agrees to accompany Dahmer to his house upon the promise of "a few beers" with Dahmer, who has the house to himself.

After several hours of talking, drinking and listening to music, Dahmer kisses Hicks, which makes Hicks confused and angry. He asks Hicks to take him to the rock concert, but Hicks refuses, and insults Dahmer with homophobic slurs. Angered, Dahmer bludgeons Hicks with a 10 pound dumbbell, knocking him unconscious. Dahmer then proceeds to strangle him to death, strip him naked, and masturbate as he stands above the corpse. Hours later, Dahmer drags the body to the basement. The following day, Dahmer dissects Hicks' body in his basement and later buries the remains. Several weeks later, he unearths the remains and pares the flesh from the bones. He dissolves the flesh in acid before flushing the solution down the toilet. He crushes the bones with a sledgehammer and scatters them in the woodland behind the family home.

1980s to early 1990[]

Sometime in September, Lionel returns home with his new girlfriend Shari Jordan, and finds Jeffrey drunk on the couch. The three then talk at a local diner about Jeffrey’s plans after high school, with Lionel suggesting he go to Ohio State University and even offers to pay for his fist semester. Dahmer flunks out of college after only one semester, however, because he is constantly drunk and barely attends class. His father is deeply disappointed in him, and demands that he join the Army, and Jeffrey reluctantly complies. He is then shipped off to Germany and begins working as a medic.

During his service, he drugs several of his fellow officers and sexually assaults them while they are unconscious. Later he is honorably discharged due to his alcoholism. He then moves to Miami, Florida and gets a job at a sandwich shop. Shortly afterward, he begs his father to let him move back home to Milwaukee. His father agrees and allows him to live with his grandmother Catherine, under the condition he would get a full-time job and behave himself. Jeffrey agrees, and begins working at a sandwich store as a butcher.

To satisfy his sexual urges and need for companionship, he goes to a local clothing store, steals a mannequin, and brings it home to use as a sex toy. His grandmother eventually discovers it, however, and throws it out. Later at the suggestion of his grandmother Jeffrey attended the state fair but began to have visions of Steven Hicks, which so sexually aroused him that he started masturbating in public. He is arrested for indecent exposure and loses his job as a consequence.

He begins having sex with men at bathhouses, but is unsatisfied with the fact they always leave him afterwards, so he begins drugging them so he can have complete control of them. Eventually, however, the owner of the bathhouse finds out what Jeffrey is doing and bans him, and even informs the other bathhouses in the area, who ban him as well.

He hooks up with a man named Steven Tuomi and takes him to a luxury hotel to party, drink, and have sex. In the morning, Jeffrey wakes up next to Tuomi's dead body, and realizes that he killed him, even though he does not remember doing so. Jeffrey then stuffs the body in a suitcase and goes home to dismember him; he keeps Steven’s head in a box as a souvenir.

At this point, he decides to stop fighting his homicidal urges; over the next two years, he murders three men named James Doxator, Richard Guerrero, and Anthony Sears.

One night, while out wandering the streets, he encounters a man named Ronald Flowers who is having car trouble. Jeffrey lures him to his house with the promise of helping jump-start his car. Jeffrey then gives Ronald a cup of coffee, but secretly spikes it with sedatives. Just as Jeffrey is about to kill Ronald, however, his grandmother interrupts by complaining about the noise. Seeing Ronald is not well, she takes him to a bus station. Later, Flowers attempts to get Jeffrey charged with attempted murder, but the police conduct only a half-hearted investigation, not even bothering to search for any evidence, thus allowing him to get away with this crimes.

Sometime later, he offers his 14-year-old neighbor Somsack Sinthasomphone $50 to take nude photos, only to drug him and try to kill him. Thankfully, Somsack manages to resist the drugs long enough to escape and report Jeffrey to the police. Jeffrey is then arrested at his job for child molestation, but the judge presiding over his case sentences him to only one year in a work release camp, along with counseling and community service.

After Jeffrey is released from prison, his father and grandmother finally kick him out of the house and force him to get an apartment of his own. Jeffrey finds a cheap apartment located in 924 North 25th Street.

Later murders[]

Throughout the early 1990s, Jeffrey murdered, raped and mutilated around six men. His next-door neighbor Glenda Cleveland heard many of his murders from the air vent and called the police several times, but they didn’t believe Cleveland and took no action against Jeffrey. Jeffrey then met a man deaf named Tony Hughes who was an aspiring model. Unlike Jeffrey’s other victims Tony showed a genuine interest in him romantically thus Jeff decided not to kill him. Jeffrey and Tony spent the next week dating and spending time with each other until it was time for Tony to go home and told Jeffrey if he would return next week. However Jeffrey feared Tony was lying so he reluctantly killed him and then proceeded to cook and eat some of his remains.

On the night May 27, 1991 Jeffrey found a fourteen year old boy named Konerak attempting to purchase beer with his friends. Jeffrey offered to purchase the beer for and and pay him fifty dollars if he allowed him to take photographs of him. Once they arrive at his apartment, Konerak reveals he is actually the brother of Somsack Sinthasomphone the boy he was convicted for molesting two years prior and the only reason he agreed to allow Jeffrey to take photos of him is because his family needs the money. Jeffrey then gives him some beer, however Jeffrey spiked the beer and Konerak falls unconscious. Jeffrey then gets a power drill to pierce his skull and then proceeds to fill it with acid in an attempt to lobotomize him so he would be his personal sex slave. Jeffrey then leaves to get some beer, however despite being brain damaged Konerak manages to slowly walk out of the apartment building and is found by Glenda Cleveland and her daughter. They then call the police over the matter and Jeffrey lies to the authorities that Konerak was his nineteen year old boyfriend and he was actually drunk. Glenda tries to plead with the authorities that Konerak is underage and may have been drugged but they ignored their claims and gave Konerak back to Dahmer where he then promptly killed him and preserved his remains. Dahmer then proceeded to murder four more victims afterwards.

Imprisonment[]

Arrest and Trial[]

On July 22, 1991, Dahmer as usual, went to a gay club to party and offered three men $50 to come back to his house with him so he could take photos of them. One of them, Tracy Edwards, agreed to do so. Tracy went back to Dahmer's apartment but quickly realized something was wrong he smelled the decaying remains of his victims but Jeffrey passed it off as "spoiled meat". Tracy soon became unnerved with Dahmer and attempted to leave but Jeffrey then forced Tracy by knifepoint to stay with him. He then forced Tracy to his bedroom to watch The Exorcist 3 with him and later handcuffed one of Tracy's wrists, however Tracy is able to distract Jeffrey long enough to fight back and escape. Tracy ran across the street and alerted two nearby police officers about Dahmer attempting to kill him. Tracy returned with police, who did a search around Jeffrey's apartment and discovered the gruesome photos of his victims that he had kept as souvenirs of his murders. Dahmer attempted to run away but was tackled to the ground by the cops, Dahmer then broke down in guilt whined "For what I did I should be dead". They later discovered several preserved human body parts in his apartment including human skeletons, hearts, male genitalia among other countless pieces of gruesome evidence.

Dahmer then explained his crimes in full detail to the authorities about every murder he committed for the last thirteen years and begged the detectives to just give him the death sentence. Jeffrey is then visited by his father who questions why he did what he did, Jeffrey claims he was inspired by the taxidermist hobbies he did as a kid leading to Lionel blaming himself. Jeffrey is advised by his father and lawyer to plead insanity so he can be put in a mental hospital rather than prison, but Jeffrey's denies this stating he knew full well what he was doing and that he didn't want any leniency. During the trial the families of Jeffrey's victims each give a impact statement with some condemning Jeffrey for his actions and one in particular Rita Isbell the older sister of his eleventh victim Errol Lindsey broke down in rage and called out Jeffrey's actions even attempting to attack him.

Although Dahmer tries to take his father's advice and plead insanity the court deems him legally sane and denies this plea. He then pleads guilty to his crimes and sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in prison. The State of Wisconsin does not have the Death Penalty but Dahmer would have to serve a minimum of 936 years; meaning he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Dahmer professed heavy remorse for his actions, and read out a statement that was prepared by him to the judge and families, apologizing for what he had done and all the pain he caused. Later he says goodbye to his father and stepmother before he is sent to prison.

Prison Life[]

Once he was sent to jail he began receiving letters from “fans”, who idolized his crimes akin to a horror movie villains like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, they all asked for his autograph in exchange for money which he then used to purchase a recorder that played whale sounds to help him sleep. However this recorder is confiscated by the guards who note that it actually sounds like people dying. Following this he began antagonizing other inmates by making his food look like human body parts, which caught the attention of a fellow inmate Christopher Scarver who called him out and claimed he was being disrespectful and had no remorse for his actions.

Later on Dahmer talked to the priest in the prisons church and began questioning if it was possible to absolve his sins and get forgiveness. Afterwards he began looking to God to redeem himself for his crimes and even made the decision to get baptized. However, at a prison church service, Dahmer was attacked by a fellow inmate, who used a razor blade to cut his neck. The wound was superficial, and Dahmer recovered. He was later baptized on the same day fellow serial killer John Wayne Gacy was executed and talked to his father about his attempts to change for the better which Lionel was very proud of.

Death[]

On November 28, 1994. Dahmer was assigned to a work detail at his prison's gym. He was accompanied by fellow inmates Jesse Anderson, a white man who had stabbed his wife to death and tried to frame two Black men for the crime, and Christopher Scarver, a mentally ill Black man who had murdered his manager after accusing him of withholding his salary.

Once left unsupervised, Scarver murdered Anderson and confronted Dahmer. He began to question Dahmer, asking what his motive for killing was and if he was an actual Christian in which Dahmer responded "I was lost". Dahmer tried to justify himself by saying that God has chosen to forgive and save him, only for Scarver to reply that his god was one of vengeance, and that He would never forgive Dahmer for his crimes and had sent Scarver as a vessel to avenge the deaths of the men Dahmer had killed. Dahmer accepted his fate and was brutally beaten by Scarver using a metal bar, causing Dahmer to die of blunt force trauma to the brain. He was cremated as per his final wishes and his parents were given his ashes.

Legacy[]

After Jeffrey’s death, Joyce ordered his brain to be preserved in hopes of having it studied to find out if there was any internal factors that caused his mental illness (possibly to further put blame away from for terrible parenting being one of the true causes.) However, Lionel denies this notion as Jeffrey’s final wishes were for his entire body to be cremated. The two argue before agreeing to settle the matter in court. The judge ultimately rules in favor of Lionel, and Jeffrey’s brain is thus cremated incinerating the last remains of the serial killer, thus putting an end to the twisted story of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Trivia[]

  • Evan Peters claimed that Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the hardest roles he had ever played, and that sometimes he had to be snapped out of his character in between takes.
  • Dahmer did not actually kill his neighbor, Dean Vaughn. Dean’s murder remains unsolved to this day.
  • In the show it is implied that Jeffrey’s habit of preserving his victims body parts was inspired by fellow serial killer Ed Gein, with Jeffrey claiming he read about him in a comic book before he started his murder spree. In real life however any connection between the two killers is purely speculation and has never been proven.
  • In the show during Jeffrey’s trial he was seen wearing his trademark aviator glasses, but the real Jeffrey Dahmer never wore his glasses in the courtroom as he wanted to avoid seeing clearly so he would not have to look his victims' families in the eye.
  • The scene depicting Osvaldo Durruthy attempting to kill Dahmer with a shiv is shown before Dahmer was baptized. In reality the attempt happened two months after. Dahmer had also already graduated from high school a month before killing Steve Hicks, while in the show he is still in school when the event happens.
  • The show depicts Jeffrey with light blonde hair, but in real life he had dark blonde hair.
  • The Jeffrey Dahmer story (as well the rest of the series) has been a subject of controversy with the public. For instance the names of Dahmer's victims and their families were not only used by Netflix without consent from the real families, who said that the series brought back traumatic memories.
