Jemma is a major antagonist in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy game, Genshin Impact who serves as one of the two main antagonists alongside Lorenzo in Lyney's Story Quest: Felis Fuscus Chapter: Act I - The Forgotten Thief.
Initially appearing as the bereaved fiancée of the famous Fontainian Magician, Cesar, she is in truth, the holder of the "Phantom Weasel" thief identity, who intended to use Cesar as a scapegoat.
She is voice by Jessica Osborne in English.
Personality[]
Growing up as an orphan on the streets of Fontaine, Jemma was exposed to numerous accounts of betrayal, abuse, and scorn from others. She had initially managed to cling onto some form of happiness from gathering waste to make drawings or toys. Yet she was soon exposed to another betrayal, causing everything to be taken from her. This incident truly influenced her to hate the world, believing the world decided even the smallest bit of joy was too good for her. From this, she began to loathe happiness altogether and decided to steal the happiness of others as a means to fill the void in her life.
History[]
Past[]
As a child, both Jemma's parents died from unknown causes, leaving her to grow up orphaned and homeless on the streets of Fontaine. She was bullied by the other children, and was often betrayed by those who she trusted.
Though she initially managed to find some joy in making toys from waste, she soon encountered yet another betrayal, causing her to lose everything once again. Her upbringing had caused her to detest and envy the happiness of others, and she therefore swore to steal their happiness as a means to fill the void in her life.
She resorted to thievery, stealing from the rich and poor alike, earning her a reputation as a famous Fontainian Thief, the Phantom Weasel. Yet her thefts also made her a major target for the authorities, and she had to frequently watch her back to avoid being caught.
Murdering Cesar[]
At some point, Jemma entered a relationship with the famous Fontainian Magician, Cesar. The two became engaged, but while Cesar was genuinely in love with her, Jemma had only intended to use him as a scapegoat for her crimes. She noticed that Cesar's apprentice, Lorenzo, had secretly hated him, and decided to use him in order to carry out Cesar's murder. During this time, she had also met Lyney and Lynette who were taken in by Cesar as his students for 10 days.
Plotting with Lorenzo, the two carried out Cesar's murder by sabotaging a box which he was going to use in his high-drop magic trick. The act was to be carried out in that Cesar would appear to be trapped in a box as it was suspended in the air. The base of the box would then open, making it appear as if Cesar had fallen out. When in truth, he would escape by pushing a button to open a hidden door, while a dummy would fall in his place. However, Jemma and Lorenzo sabotaged the box by switching it with a different one that did not have the button on the left side, which was Cesar's dominant hand. Cesar therefore struggled to find the button until the box gave away, causing him to fall to his death.
After Cesar's death, Jemma and Lorenzo put false evidence in his belongings, thus framing him as the Phantom Weasel and tarnishing his legacy
Revealing the Truth[]
For 10 years, Jemma maintained her façade of innocent by playing the role of a lovesick and devoted fiancé who would visit Cesar's grave often. Yet 10 years after the incident, Lyney and Lynette, who were now grown up, would come to suspect that Cesar had been framed by the real Phantom Weasel. To lure out the true thief, Lyney put a poster on the Opera Epiclese, declaring the Phantom Weasel's return.
While Jemma was conducting her routine grave visit, she was encountered by the Traveler and Lyney. Having not seen him for 10 years, she failed to recognize the young magician. They asked her several questions regarding Cesar's tragic incident, yet Jemma maintained her lovesick role and requested to be left alone. Realizing they could expose her identity, she had Lorenzo and his men to go after them.
After confronting and fighting the Traveler and Lyney, Lorenzo admitted to them that he was the Phantom Weasel and was arrested by the Gardes, much to Jemma's relief. Lynette later invited her to come see Lyney's magic show, which he would be holding in Cesar's honor. Upholding her grieving widow act, she gratefully accepted the offer.
Halfway through the performance, the audience was directed outside to view Lyney's next trick. With everyone besides the Traveler and Paimon gone, Lyney and Lynette both confronted Jemma. To which they revealed that they knew she was the true Phantom Weasel, and Lorenzo's forthcoming confession had only strengthened their suspicions of her.
Jemma finally confessed that Lorenzo was plagued with guilt for murdering his master. He realized that revealing The Phantom Weasel's true identity would serve no purpose, yet if he turned himself in while she remained free, she could at least take care of his loved ones in his place. After confessing, Jemma asked Lyney what they would get from finding her, stating that Lorenzo's actions had let her escape scot-free. Yet Lyney disagreed, telling her now that Lorenzo was arrested, she lost the only loyal friend she ever had and she would be alone for the rest of her empty life.
Influenced by his words, Jemma turned herself into the Gardes the next day in the hope she could at least see Lorenzo one last time.
