No! I will not go yet! My... legacy! I... must... preserve it!
~ Jeremiah as he is dragged off to Hell in the "Good Ending".

Jeremiah Vermander is the main antagonist of the 2022 indie horror comedy videogame Midnight Maid Night. He's the former head of the corrupt Vermander family, former owner of the mansion where the game takes place and the father of Joseph.

Appearance[]

Jeremiah is a rather muscular, elderly man with red hair and beard and empty, black eyes. He is also bald.

Personality[]

Jeremiah is shown to be a cruel, callous and abusive narcissist who cares about no one but himself and his family legacy, and the way said legacy affects his image. He was a horrible boss to his servants, having no problems with flat out killing them. Overall, he considers his legacy and social status extremely important (to the point he killed Agatha, the woman his son loved and wanted to marry, because she was a servant). He is very fond of reading his newspaper.

While Jeremiah wants his son, Joseph, to stay with him, this doesn't come off as genuine love for him, but simply him wanting to have control over him, probably seeing him as nothing more than a part of his own legacy due to Jeremiah's narcissism.

As a ghost, Jeremiah hasn't changed much, although, following Joseph's words, he has "since lost the presence of mind" to check the mansion's secret hiding spots (although a brief jumpscare shows him being somewhat aware of them).

Biography[]

Past[]

Jeremiah was the head of the Vermander family and the owner of his own mansion. He was a cruel and narcissistic person who cared about no one but himself and was very short-tempered, having even burned some of his servants who prepared him bad meals. Another notable cruel action of his was sending his faithful servant Cornelius out in a snow blizzard to take the newspaper (which couldn't be delivered due to the blizzard), without even giving the poor man a winter coat, causing him to freeze to death. Yet another heinous action was killing Agatha, the woman his son, Joseph, loved, merely because she was a servant and a fox, and shoved her corpse beneath the floors of the mansion. It's also implied that he performed demonic rituals, at least judging by the mansion's room with the pentagram.

After his death, Joseph tried to clear their family's name by helping the poor, lowering the prices of the stuff that they sold and returning some "liberated" artifacts. This angered Jeremiah, who came back from the dead as a ghost and is implied to have killed his own son. Since then, Jeremiah haunted his mansion, alongside the spirits of Joseph, Cornelius and Agatha. The mansion was then sold to a new owner (possibly by J.P. Vermander, assuming the mansion is the same one).

Midnight Maid Night[]

Jeremiah is the first and main threat of the game. He wanders around the mansion, looking for the Midnight Maids. When he's nearby, the candles' flames become blue, and he can be avoided by hiding.

His ultimate fate depends on the ending obtained.

"Bad Ending"[]

Jeremiah catches the Midnight Maids, killing both of them, with their souls joining the ghosts haunting the mansion.

"Unresolved Ending"[]

Jeremiah actually doesn't appear in this ending, nor is he mentioned. It's likely he continued haunting the mansion as he always did, possibly killing the new owner.

"Good Ending"[]

Jeremiah faces the Midnight Maids and Joseph, the latter of which decides to finally stand up against him and later freeing his own soul alongside Agatha's, much to Jeremiah's displeasure, who intends to make the Midnight Maids pay for his son leaving. Fortunately, he's interrupted by Cornelius, who gives him the newspaper he had asked for years ago, although Jeremiah refuses it, insulting Cornelius and not even thanking him. Cornelius takes no offense, instead warning his former master that a heat wave is incoming. Seconds later, flames surround Jeremiah, and he's dragged into the ground, assumingly being sent to Hell itself. Cornelius later has his soul freed.
