Jeremiah Witkins, better known as The Crooked Man, is the primary antagonist of Hellboy: The Crooked Man and Others, in his eponymously-titled short story. The people of the Appalachian town where he resides believes that he was one of the first pioneers to reach the mountains, and was responsible not only for half of the issues between the white settlers and the indigenous Americans that were there first, but also playing both sides during the American Revolutionary War. He was eventually hung for his misdeeds, but rather than being damned, the devil sent him back, where he hoards the souls of those that have made deals with the devil (which are in the shapes of coins).
In 1958, by the time of the story, he's rapidly approaching upon the collection date of one Tom Ferrell, who made a deal with the devil at the age of 15.
