~ Jeremy trying to excuse molesting his cousin |
Jeremy (last name unknown) is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Escape". He is a pedophile who molested and raped his cousin and framed his aunt's husband for the crime.
He was portrayed by Jack Noseworthy.
Biography[]
Past[]
Ten years prior to the events of the episode, Jeremy visited his pregnant aunt Carin, to stay with her and her husband, Mike Baxter. He shared a room with his cousin Lee, Carin's nine-year-old son from her previous marriage. One night, Jeremy molested and raped Lee and threatened to kill him if he told anyone. When Carin found Lee's bloodstained sheets, Lee panicked and accused Mike of raping him, an allegation he stuck to because he resented Mike's presence in his mother's life. Mike protested his innocence, but Carin did not believe him and had him arrested, and he was eventually convicted and sent to prison. Jeremy, meanwhile, testified that he had seen Mike behave inappropriately around Lee in order to avoid suspicion and to ensure Lee's silence.
As an adult, Jeremy became an architect, and he remained close to Carin, hypocritically posing as an advocate for her and Lee. It is implied that he also sexually abused other children but evaded detection.
"Escape"[]
When Mike escapes from prison, Jeremy rushes to Carin's side to make sure that Lee does not reveal what he did to him. He repeats his lies about Mike's supposedly inappropriate behavior to Detective Olivia Benson of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit and Federal Marshal Andy Eckerson, who are investigating the case.
Mike eventually kidnaps Lee and tries to make him recant his accusations, but Lee refuses, having repeated the lie to himself so many times that he almost believes it. One of Eckerson's snipers shoots and wounds Mike, and his blood is analyzed against that of Lee's sheets from 10 years earlier; it does not match, proving that Mike is innocent. The blood sample also reveals that Lee's real rapist is related to him. They cross out other candidates, before settling on Jeremy who coincidentally visited the family the night before Mike was arrested.
Benson and Eckerson confront Jeremy, who vehemently refused to give up DNA after being told that Mike was innocent. He feigns concern for his family suffering because of their accusation, angering Eckerson who swears that they will get him for the crimes but Benson pulled him away. Later, Benson gets Lee to admit that he falsely accused Mike, devastating Carin who realized Lee's actions deprived an innocent man of his life and her other son Danny of a father. Carin was also angry by Jeremy's lies.
SVU Detective Fin Tutuola arrests Jeremy for rape and child sexual abuse, bringing the protesting man in and when he sees Eckerson and Benson, he threatens to sue them both for police brutality but they are unfazed and Lee confronts Jeremy. Upon seeing Lee, he tells his cousin to say that he is innocent, but Lee is no longer afraid of him or of his secret being revealed, and so he identifies Jeremy as his rapist. Lee also condemns Jeremy for his acts and admits shame at accusing Mike. Jeremy tries to justify what he did by saying that he was "just messing around", but his excuses fall on deaf ears as he is taken into police custody.
He is then imprisoned for rape and child sexual abuse, while Mike is exonerated and released.
