| ~ Jeremy Downs explains how he feels empty all the time and he can't fix it. |
Jeremy Downs is a supporting antagonist in season one of Dexter. He is a teenage sociopath who commits two murders, bringing him to the attention of Dexter Morgan.
He was portrayed by Mark L. Young, who also played Owen Porter in Criminal Minds.
Biography[]
Past[]
At the age of 15, Jeremy was raped by an older man. Seeking revenge, he lured the man into a South Miami park under the pretense of watching alligators, where he brutally stabbed him several times and stole his wallet. He was convicted of manslaughter due to the knife wounds appearing random and impulsive and was sentenced to four years in juvie.
However, Dexter Morgan is unconvinced that the murder was impulsive, noticing that he stabbed his victim in several major blood vessels. Therefore, he is convinced that, as a cold-blooded murderer who got away with it, Jeremy fits his "code", and begins planning to kill him.
Dexter[]
Jeremy is released after serving his sentence and moves into the Homestead Halfway House. Dexter begins stalking Jeremy, following him to a market where he watches him buying a knife from a vendor. Jeremy begins swinging the knife around, nearly cutting Dexter by accident, before the vendor stops him. This behavior leads Dexter to suspect Jeremy plans to kill again.
While Dexter is staking out the halfway house, Jeremy leaves with another boy named Lucas to watch alligators. Dexter realizes that Jeremy intends to re-enact his first murder and tails them to the park. As it becomes apparent that there are no alligators, Jeremy goes for his knife but is interrupted by Dexter and runs away. Dexter then encounters an alligator, giving Jeremy the opportunity to break into his car and steal his wallet.
That night Jeremy is playing a video game in the halfway house when Dexter breaks in and switches off the lights. He then slams Jeremy into a pillar. Jeremy, mistakenly believing Dexter wants to sexually abuse him, threatens to kill Dexter like the last guy who raped him. Dexter, who was unaware that Jeremy's victim raped him, asks him why he didn't report it; Jeremy replies that he was too embarrassed. Dexter decides to spare Jeremy, but takes his wallet back and warns Jeremy that he will come back for him if he kills anyone who doesn't deserve it.
A few episodes later, a student named Jason Riech is stabbed to death. Investigating the scene, Dexter notices the similarity to Jeremy's first kill and realizes he was responsible. He advises Sergeant James Doakes that the killer was experienced with knives and he should look into similar cases. He then investigates the halfway house, learning from another inmate that Jeremy prostitutes himself to older men in Flamingo Park.
That night Dexter approaches Jeremy in the park. Jeremy propositions him, and Dexter tells him they can go to his car. However, just then Doakes shows up and arrests Jeremy for murder, having taken Dexter's advice and found the similarities between the cases.
While Jeremy is detained Dexter takes a DNA sample from him and asks why he ignored his warning. Jeremy replies that he feels empty inside, and was hoping that killing would make him feel something. When Dexter asks if killing made him feel better, Jeremy replies that it, in fact, made his emotional emptiness worse. Dexter advises him to kill someone who deserves to die. Just then a cop enters and starts kicking Jeremy's chair in order to intimidate him. Dexter leaves, sending Jeremy's lawyer to deal with the situation.
Later Dexter is informed that Jeremy has committed suicide by slitting his wrists. He realizes that Jeremy took his advice and killed someone who deserved to die: himself.
