Jessom Williams is the main antagonist of the short story The Lightning Tree and its revised novella version The Narrow Road Between Desires, by Patrick Rothfuss, which take place in the world of The Kingkiller Chronicle. He is an overarching antagonist who nonetheless plays a major role in the story.
Biography[]
Jessom was an animal trapper who lived in the town of Newarre. He had a wife named Nettie, a son named Rike, and two daughters named Tess and Bip. Jessom was abusive and would often beat his wife and children. He was also an alcoholic who would use the family's money to buy alcohol, which kept his family in poverty.
One day, Rike went to Bast and asked him to get rid of Jessom. Bast sent Rike on pointless errands to make a "charm" to get rid of his father. In the meantime, Bast destroyed Crazy Martin's distillery and stole some of his bottles. He then laid out the bottles along Jessom's traps. Following this,Bast contronted Jessom by the waterfall and viciously beat him to the point of unconsciousness.
Bast sent to children to the waterfall who found Jessom. The children ran to ge the cosntable who found Jessom. As soon as Jessom woke up, he fled the town and joined the army. Everyone in the town assumed Crazy Martin attacked Jessom as revenge for destroying the distillery. Rike believed that the charm he and Bast made got rid of Jessom.
