Biography[]
Ji Ling was a skilled general who served warlond Yuan Shu in the final years of the Han Dynasty. He was one of his most trusted officers and was often tasked with leading his forces. He wielded a 50 catty trident and claimed that he can draw a bow of 500 pounds and have a deadly aim at 50 paces.
In 196 AD, under orders from his lord, he personally led a 300,000 strong army to attack Liu Bei at Xiaopei. Lu Bu, who was a de-facto ally fo Liu Bei, and had recently stole Xu Province from him, intervened and asked both Ji Ling and Liu Bei to join him in a feast in order to make peace between them. Ji Ling asked him if he was going to kill him, with Lu Bu telling him that he will resolve their conflict by shooting an arrow through his trident halberd from a far distance.
If he fails, Ji Ling and Liu Bei would continue to fight, but if he succeeds, they will both withdraw, otherwise he'll have to kill them both. Lu Bu, succeeded much to Ji Ling's surprise and frustration. He was forced to retreat back to his capital and informed his lord Yuan Shu, who was furious and continued to attack both Liu Bei and Lu Bu.
In 197 AD Yuan Shu declared himself emperor and formed the short-lived Zhong Dynasty which led to the formation of a coalition against him by Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Ce and Lu Bu. Yuan Shu's forces lost battle after battle and at one point Ji Ling, who remained loyal to the end, escorted his master during a desperate escape. They were soon attack by Liu Bei's army. Ji Ling dueled both Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, and gave them a hard fight but was eventually killed by Zhang Fei (with whom he had developed a rivalry during the halberd shooting meeting) after ten bouts.
