James "Jim" Vance was a secondary antagonist in the 2012 television miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.
He was portrayed by Tom Berenger.
Vance was the uncle of Hatfield family patriarch William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield. Vance was found of his various canine companions over the years. An all around psychopath his behavior concerned even Devil Anse at times.
During the Civil War he was a supporter of the Confederacy. Vance would often kill any wayward Union soldiers he came across.
Shortly after Devil Anse returned home, Vance was at the local tavern when he came across Harmon McCoy, who had recently returned home from his service in the Union Army. Vance insulted Harmon, and then tried to shoot him when Harmon accused Vance of committing bestiality with his dog. Despite pleas from Harmon's wife, Devil Anse was unable to prevent Vance from killing Harmon.
As the feud between the Hatfield and McCoy families intensified, Vance was at the forefront of any violent acts committed against the McCoys and their allies. Vance was finally killed in a skirmish when McCoys and their allies from Kentucky attempted to arrest him for crimes against the McCoy family. Upon hearing of this, Devil Anse was not overly surprised that Vance had met with a violent end, figuring that the day would have come where he would have had to have killed Vance himself.
