James “Jimmy” Martinez, also known by his codename Mr. Scrooge, is the main antagonist of the 2022 Christmas action-comedy film Violent Night.
He is the notorious mercenary who despised Christmas for ruining his life, he has been placed on the naughty list by Santa Claus when attempting to steal 300 million dollars from a rich family whom he plans to also kill in the process.
He was portrayed by John Leguizamo, who also played Benny Blanco in Carlito’s Way, Violator in Spawn, Javier in Kick-Ass 2, Tybalt in William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, and Santiago in Ride Along.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
When Jimmy was a child, his father loved Christmas and bought him presents. When his father lost his job, they could not afford to celebrate Christmas anymore. Jimmy grew jealous of his next door neighbors who had enough money to celebrate Christmas, so Jimmy broke into their house one night to steal their presents. While in their house, Jimmy accidentally frightened the grandfather who fell down the stairs and broke his neck, later dying in the hospital. Jimmy was arrested and began to hate Christmas for ruining his life. Following his possible release or break out, he began his life of crime, vowing to ruin Christmas for everyone.
Violent Night[]
When he was an adult, Jimmy put together a team of mercenaries to steal 300 million dollars from a rich family. They planned it out for a long time and learned every aspect of the family's history. Jimmy and his crew made up Christmas-themed codenames. Jimmy's codename was Mr. Scrooge. He served as the boss of the mercenaries with the codenames Krampus, Gingerbread, Candy Cane, Sugarplum, Frosty, Peppermint, Jingle, Tinsel, and Techie.
On Christmas, Scrooge and his crew broke into the mansion and killed all of the staff where he had already planted some of them in as servants. They then seated all of the family while trying to break into the vault. When the mother tried to stand up to Scrooge, he promptly punched her in the face and told her to sit down while they cracked the code to the safe. Scrooge's plans where threatened when he found one of his men dead from a fight with a man in a Santa Claus costume.
Eventually, Scrooge and his men track down the man dressed as Santa and tie him up. They ask him who he is and he claims to be the real Santa Claus. Jimmy doesn't believe him but Santa tells him and his men personal things about what they wrote him when they where children. Jimmy still doesn't believe him and instead tells him the story about how Christmas ruined his life. Santa claims that that what happened to him wasn't his fault, but Jimmy gets mad and attacks Santa before his attack is stopped by snow coming from the ceiling. His team believes it to be real Snow, but Scrooge angrily realizes that it is just styrofoam from the youngest daughter of the family pouring it from the attic into the air vents. With the goons distracted, Santa is able to get away up the chimney.
Scrooge greets the kill squad sent to kill them and it is revealed that the Kill Squad led by Commander Thorp is actually working with Scrooge to get a cut of the money. Scrooge and the kill squad go downstairs to see that the money in the safe is gone and somebody has stolen it. They go upstairs to the family and threaten to kill them before one of them tells them that he stole the money and shows them where the money is. Scrooge attempts to kill them after finding the money, but Santa arrives and attacks him.
Scrooge escapes, but sees Santa riding at him with a snowmobile. Santa continued chasing after Mr. Scrooge, until eventually, he sees him outside an old shed, just standing around and waving at him. As he tells him to come on over, Santa drives the speeder towards him, unaware that Scrooge is standing with a tree stump behind him, and as Santa gets close enough, he moves out of the way, sending the speeder and Santa flying into the building.
After that, Scrooge opens fire on the place, and doesn't hear Santa screaming in pain, which gets him to think he might still be alive. He approaches the building and after seeing Santa is indeed still alive, he tries to shoot him with a pistol. He avoids all the shots until the gun runs out of ammo. With Scrooge out of guns, he finds Santa's list and when he takes a look at it, he sees his name, Jimmy Martinez is on naughty list, along with all the crimes and other bad stuff he's done, and finally, it gets him to discover that he is fighting the real Santa Claus. However, instead of surrendering, he takes out his stick and gets a spike, and gives a message, saying Christmas dies tonight, and so the fight continues. They both try to overpower each other and they accidentally create a spark, which lights up the gas leaking out of the speeder and so the guys make a run for the door. After they get back up, Santa tries to hit Scrooge with his hammer, but he slips on the ice, which gets Scrooge to try and hit him with the spike, but then Santa grabs the hammer again and blocks the attack, until Scrooge hits his hand, making him let go of the hammer and get it out of the way. Although, Santa tries to crawl over to it, but Scrooge stabs him and pulling him back, but he still manages to grab the hammer, and he hits him in the head with it. After that, they continue the fight, and as Scrooge tries to overpower him, Santa gives him a punch to the face, putting him down on the ground. He then tries to hit him with his hammer, but after one miss and tries to hit him again, Scrooge throws some snow at him, distracting him long enough for him to get back up and manages to throw the hammer right out of his hands. He then tries to hit Santa with the things he has, but he grabs him and twists his arms a little bit, but then, as Santa tries to get him down, Scrooge outsmarts him by pushing him back towards a chimney behind them, thanks to some help from some spikes he has on his shoes. Santa tries overpower him, but Scrooge escapes and stabs him in the chest with the spike and then he gets him down to the ground, and so, after thinking that he's going to win, he gets Santa back up and stabs his hand into the wall with the spike so he can't escape. And after a few punches to get him down; to finish the job, Scrooge takes out his knife, and gives out a final message, saying The last Christmas. He goes to slice Santa's throat, but then suddenly, he cuts his hand free and blocks the attack. After that, he brings him closer and gives out a message of his own, which is some correction for Scrooge's final message, and he says it isn't the last Christmas if he still believes, and then after Scrooge believed, Santa successfully wins the fight by touching his nose; disappearing through the chimney, and suddenly, dragging Scrooge along with him, crushing him on the way up and Santa reappears on the top, holding nothing but Scrooge's mangled torso and he just throws it down on the ground.
Personality[]
Jimmy Martinez is mostly identified by his hatred for Christmas, stemming from when he accidentally killed his neighbor's grandfather in his childhood. For that reason, he vowed to ruin Christmas for everyone. Even as a child, he was very greedy as he tried to steal his next-door neighbor's Christmas presents just because his father couldn't afford celebrating Christmas. This greedy side would extend to his adult life and eventaually create the man he is today, as he tried to steal the 300 million dollars from the Lightstones' vault.
Despite being calculative enough to plan a heist for months, he's shown to be very reckless, violent and tempermental to the extent that he sometimes doesn't think ahead of his plans, as when he didn't find the money in the Lightstones' vault, he threatened to shoot everyone in the room until Bert Lightstone pointed out that he would risk killing the only person who knew where the money is. It's this side of him that makes him very childish and impulsive, as he never let go of his childhood grudge against Christmas. This is also why he never learned to take responsibility for his mistakes; while the grandfather's death was an accident, it never occured to him that this wouldn't have happened if he hadn't tried to steal his neighbor's presents in the first place. Likewise, when he finds the naughty list with his name on it and realized Santa Claus is real, instead of understanding how his actions labeled him naughty, he decided to kill Santa so that Christmas would be ruined for everyone, further blaming him for his hatred of the holiday.
