~ Jimmy Hoffa's most famous quote |
James Riddle "Jimmy" Hoffa is the main antagonist of the 2019 Martin Scorsese film The Irishman, based on the real life union leader of the same name.
He was portrayed by Al Pacino, who also portrayed Michael Corleone in The Godfather Trilogy and Tony Montana in Scarface.
Biography[]
Jimmy is the corrupt head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and has has financial ties to organized crime syndicates like the Bufalino Crime Family. He is initially a supporting character in the story as Irish hitman and the titular protagonist villain Frank Sheeran becomes his bodyguard, friend, and confidant, however things take a turn after his arrest and loss of his official position, only letting him hold power from the shadows. His mob ties begin to deteriorate as his former underling Fitz succeeded him as head of the IBT and let it become more mob-influenced and controlled. This causes Jimmy to reveal his long-held disdain for his mafia associates and belief that they are all beneath him, when Jimmy himself is a corrupt official. After he gets released from prison early, due to supporting Nixon, Jimmy plots to regain his power with the Teamsters.
He starts by badmouthing Fitz publicly, revealing that the mob controls him. Jimmy believes he's untouchable due to having supposed "evidence" on all his former associates. Even though Frank and Russell try to reason with him and settle for something less public in the teamsters, Jimmy refuses. Leaving him no other choice, Russell sanctions a hit on Jimmy, and has Frank be the one who kills him since Frank would likely warn or protect Jimmy due to their friendship. Frank reluctantly obliges and kills Jimmy before his body is taken away and discreetly cremated.
