Jimmy McCavern is the secondary antagonist of Season 5 of the BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders. He is the leader of the Billy Boys, a Protestant razor gang based in Glasgow, Scotland. He is the arch-nemesis of Aberama Gold.

He was portrayed by Brian Gleeson, who also played Brendol Hux in The Mandalorian.

Biography[]

McCavern is the leader of the Billy Boys, a Protestant razor gang which controls every man, ship and coal mine east of Glasgow and has ties to Protestant terror groups such as the Ulster Volunteer Force. McCavern also has ties to fascist politician Oswald Mosley, offering the services of his gang as muscle at Mosley's political rallies.

When Mosley begins seeking the support of Thomas Shelby, prominent Labour MP and leader of the Birmingham Peaky Blinders gang, to help him launch his new fascist party, he sends the Billy Boys, who are looking to take over the Peaky Blinders' territory, to strongarm him. McCavern has Tommy threatened by leaving a scarecrow in his yard with a message for him telling him to look down at the ground, revealing that he is surrounded by landmines. This almost results in the death of his son Charles Shelby when he steps into the minefield, but Tommy manages to save him. McCavern also has his men approach Tommy's cousin Michael Gray and offer him a deal to depose Tommy, but his men are stopped by the Irish Republican Army, who are opposed to the Billy Boys due to their links to the UVF.

McCavern first appears in person when he and his men confront Aberama Gold, an ally of the Peaky Blinders, at his camp in the woods. Jimmy shoots and wounds Aberama before savagely beating and crucifying his son Bonnie in front of him. He leaves a message for Tommy on Bonnie's corpse reading "BY ORDER OF THE BILLY BOYS" (a reference to the Peaky Blinders slogan "By Order of the Peaky Blinders") as a warning that he cannot fight back against the Billy Boys.

Once he's recovered from his bullet wound, Aberama goes up to Scotland to get revenge on the Billy Boys. He and his men beat up a group of Billy Boys and burn them with tar before sending the leader back to Glasgow with a bullet with McCavern's name on it as a warning that Aberama is after him. McCavern in turn pursues Aberama with a small army of Billy Boys and tracks him to a gypsy camp, but finds that Arthur Shelby has already found Aberama and forced him to come back to Birmingham, leaving a grenade trap for the Billy Boys. McCavern declares that they are now at war with the Peaky Blinders.

Seeking to avoid a war, Tommy invites McCavern down to Birmingham and offers to restrain Aberama from killing him in return for the Billy Boys helping to smuggle opium through Birmingham and Glasgow. Jimmy agrees and begins discussing who best to support Mosley's interests in London. However, in the meantime Mosley has begun trying to exert power over Tommy and threatened to cede Shelby-controlled betting tracks to the Billy Boys, and the Billy Boy's allies in the UVF have been sent to rob the opium shipments and assassinated a friend of Tommy's working against Mosley. Tommy decides to move forward with his original plan: to kill Mosley and McCavern and take over Mosley's movement to advance his own political career.

At Mosley's next speech, with security provided by McCavern and the Billy Boys, Aberama is to ambush and kill McCavern from behind while another assassin snipes Mosley, with men working for Alfie Solomons providing a distraction. However, as Aberama is about to slit McCavern's throat he is stabbed to death by an unknown assailant while another kills the sniper targeting Mosley. The attackers are later revealed to be working for the IRA, who want Mosley alive for their own ends. McCavern does not appear again after the failed attempt, leaving his fate unresolved.
