Jin Kuwana (桑名 仁, Kuwana Jin), also known by his birth name, Yu Kitakata (喜多方 悠, Kitakata Yū), is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2021 thriller drama video game Lost Judgment.
He is a handyman, who is later revealed to be the mastermind behind the death of Hiro Mikoshiba and several others, as part of his "atonement" for a student who he failed to protect from Hiro and the other bullies, which led to him attempting to commit suicide, only to end up in a coma.
He is also the arch-nemesis of the private investigator Takayuki Yagami, as well as his foil, due to their similarities and different beliefs when it comes to justice.
He was voiced by Koji Yamamoto in Japanese, who also played Soreo Hiden/Kamen Rider Ichi-Gata; and Todd Haberkorn in English.
Biography[]
Past[]
When he was a Japanese teacher at the Kurokawa Academy, he learned from a student, Yoko Sawa, that Mitsuru Kusumoto had been bullied, but he did not take it seriously and treated it as a "Joke”. Nonetheless, he set up a camera in a secluded part of the classroom to confirm whether bullying was telling the truth. As a result, the camera caught clear footage of Mitsuru being bullied by Shinya Kawai, including Yasushi Akaike and Yui Mamiya (whose last name is Suzuki), watching and cheering. Later, Mitsuru jumped to his death, only ending up in a vegetative state. Shinya Kawai was soon forced to drop out of school and Kitakata was expelled for incompetence. He became angry with school bullies, including Shinya Kawai, and hid in society after changing his name to Jin Kuwana.
When the bullies reached the legal age of accountability, Kuwana showed them the video and promised that he would not release it if they worked with him. Having everything to lose, they agreed. Kuwana approached Reiko Kusomoto, Mitsuru's mother, and offered her help in personally killing Kawai, thus avenging Mitsuru's death. If she refused, Kuwana would walk away. Kusomoto eventually gave in, after seeing Kawai's unrepentant attitude. Kuwana then ordered Kawai's former friends to kidnap and hand him over to Kusomoto. Kuwana documented the entire ordeal, including the fingerprints on Kawai's body and Kusomoto personally stabbing Kawai in the heart.
With Kuwana further threatening to release fingerprint evidence to the bullies if they refused to continue working with him, the bullies stayed despite some of them, like Mamiya, having second-thoughts about murdering more people. From here, Kuwana did the same crime against countless other bullies, who mercilessly drove their victims to suicide. After their deaths, Kuwana's accomplices would bury them in unmarked graves all over Japan.
Lost Judgment[]
Kuwana was adopted by the Uncle-in-law Siren Owner and began entering the underworld with Handyman as his ostensible career. He helped Akihiro Ehara kidnap and take Hiro Mikoshiba, who had bullied his son Toshiro Ehara, to an abandoned apartment after he committed suicide after being bullied by Mikoshiba years earlier. Ehara then recorded him killing Mikoshiba, and Kuwana worked with Mamiya to fabricate a sexual harassment case that led to Ehara's arrest for sexual harassment. As a result, Ehara announced in court the condition of the body that had been found by the authorities, and used it as a warning.
Takayuki Yagami, who learned about Toshiro and Yoko Sawa after investigating the bullying incident, quickly dug deeper, not to be disturbed, Kuwana secretly ordered the White Mask of Yokohama Liumang to attack Yagami to delay his meeting with Sawa and even personally fought with Yagami. Mamiya could use Mikoshiba's body as a silent warning. Instead of dissuading Yagami, Kuwana had White Mask's leader, Tesso, lure Yagami away from Yokohama 99 and then had students attack Fumiya Sugiura and Makoto Tsukumo.
Knowing that Yagami then visited Ehara, Kuwana chose to upload the video of Mikoshiba's murder on the same night. This marks the beginning of Ehara's plan to humiliate the legal system. But it also prompted Yagami to investigate the falsification of sexual harassment case, because Ehara could not have been in two places. The connection between Sawa and Mamiya was quickly investigated. Given that Sawa was about to be invaded by Kazuki Soma, the deputy head of the outlaw RK (who was in charge), Yagami visited Sawa's apartment, where Kuwana was also there. Knowing that Sawa was inside, they were attacked by RK and had to fight. In the process, Kuwana fled alone, while Yagami was knocked unconscious during a battle with Chief Daimu Akutsu. Rescued Yagami returns to Sawa's apartment only to find that Sawa has been killed by Soma.
After escaping, Kuwana did not return to his apartment and went into hiding so that RK could not find him. This led Yagami and Masaharu Kaito to discover the missing USB drive and investigate Siren's location because Yagami thought Kuwana's Uncle-in-law Owner might know something. However, they were attacked by Soma and managed to defeat him. After Soma left, Owner approached Yagami because KUAWNA tried to get the USB drive back, but failed, and Owner left without forcing it. Yagami obtained from the USB drive a video of the bullying that Kuwana had recorded on campus, which was enough to prove that Mamiya and Akaike were also involved in the bullying. Mamiya was taken by Yagami to Charles, a video game hall run by Kaito's junior Toru Higashi, for questioning. This forced Kuwana to appear and talk to Yagami about the past. He then tried to escape, and Yagami caught up with him, but it was actually a trap for Yagami, and the students showed up and attacked him, but failed, although Kuwana escaped.
As RK's backing grew more serious, Yagami feared that Kuwana would be killed, so he continued to search for him. It was later confirmed that Kuwana had gone into hiding on Tesso's premises and that Yagami had spoken to him. Kuwana must now think about the Public Security Division plot against her for the sake of Kusumoto, the current Vice Minister of Health. Yagami, however, blamed Kuwana's “Vigilante killings” for Sawa's death and urged him to stop. Unable to persuade one side, the two fought, even though they were tied. After they had calmed down, they tried to contact Kusumoto to warn the Public Security Division of their approach and to make the manhunt impossible.
After that, Yagami secretly communicated with Kusumoto and learned that Hidemi Bando, an officer of the Public Security Division, was trying to control her intentions. Upon his return, Kuwana provided Yagami with a recording of his conversation with Sawa after the Toshiro trial and left. To deal with RK, Yagami managed to infiltrate RK's headquarters and engage Akutsu again. After Akutsu was defeated, Yagami asked him about Soma's past and, after speculating that Soma might be an agent of the Public Security Division, was attacked and Akutsu was killed.
Yagami was running for Soma, but at the same time Kusumoto agreed to take control of Bando for Mitsuru, who had woken up thirteen years earlier, which meant that Kuwana had been betrayed. Yagami, who saw Kuwana again on a cruise ship and was asked by Kuwana to deliver a necklace containing a photo of Toshiro to Ehara, said he would flee and reappear as a new identity in order to continue hunting bullies, yagami disagrees. During the dispute, Akaike was killed by Soma and the cruise ship was invaded by RK.
The sexual harassment trial had arrived, Yagami had gathered all the intelligence and evidence, and Kuwana was waiting for RK at the warehouse where Kawai's body had been hidden. After forcing Ehara to confess to the murder of Mikoshiba, Yagami and his companions went to the warehouse and engaged RK. With Kuwana's help, Soma was subdued by Yagami alone. However, Kuwana then told Yagami and others to stay away from the body, as he would detonate a bomb to destroy the body and prevent Kusumoto from going to prison for murder. Yagami used Sawa's death to persuade him to stop, but after failing to do so, he decided to deny Kuwana what he thought was Justice.
When the fighting was over, Kuwana was forced to give up the bomb and Kusumoto turned himself in for the crime. And with no evidence or possible endorsement by Yagami, Kuwana left and plans to continue using his new identity in the future. But not before he anonymously provided the location of the bodies of other bullies. The fate of Kuwana and his accomplices remains unknown to this day.
