A lesson without pain is meaningless. That's because no one can gain without sacrificing something. Ah, this is my favorite anime line. Let's be nice to the kids later.
~ Seok-bong to Jun-ho.
Junho, I can't do Teacher Bongdi anymore...? If you want to change anything, you have to do something.
~ Jo Seok-bong's last words before comitting suicide.

Jo Seok-bong (in Korean: 조석봉, Jo Seok-bong) is the deuteragonist of the first season in the South Korean Netflix drama D.P and overarching protagonist of the D.P Season 2.

He is a member of the special enlisted corps of the 103rd Infantry Division, a senior of Ahn Jun-ho, a lecturer and student at an art school, and was once a promising judo player, but he hates the sense of hitting people and seeks peace, so he quit judo and dreams of becoming a webtoon writer. However, he tried to do well in the army, but the abuse perpetrated by Hwang Jang-Soo and his party breaks his spirit and makes him the cold blood vengeful misanthrope.

He was portrayed by Cho Hyun-Chul.

Personality[]

He was really good and kind hearted, and in middle school before enlistment, he quit judo even though he was a judo prospect aiming for a gold medal in the national sports competition because he didn't want to hit people. Not only that, but he was also really nice when he was a lecturer at an art academy, and it is said that even when the children joked around badly, he guided them and laughed. For this reason, he is said to have been called "Jo Seok-bong Gandhi", also known as "Bong-di"

However, Hwang Jang-Soo and his gang have been beaten, harassed, and subjected to harsh acts to satisfy their sadism, and they clumsily execute the incongruent gossip under the instructions of the old man, and in the process, his kind and docile personality is constantly assaulted. He begins to show emotional instability due to overwork and bullying, and is slowly falling apart, eventually falling into an avenger and misanthropic who desires the suffering of those who torment him.

Biography[]

Jo Seok-bong was pushed by Hwang Jang-soo into a wall nailed to the back of his head, and then he was subjected to the harsh treatment of becoming a human chair while lying on his stomach under Hwang Jang-soo, who had all his successors in the dormitory put him in a riding posture. However, suffering from the trauma of Shin Woo-seok's suicide, he gave Ahn Jun-ho a chocolate pie who beat Park Seong-woo and went to the brigade, and in return for catching Choi Jun-mok, he was a really good senior to his direct successor, Ahn Jun-ho.

However, the harshness of the seniors is getting worse, and they continue to undergo sexual and physical abuse, such as verbal abuse and beatings, as well as forcing themselves to masturbate as an 'anti-aircraft gun show', supporting their faces with cigarettes, and burning pubic hair with a lighter saying they give free waxing.

In the end, he can't stand the harsh behavior and deserts. While standing guard at the guard station at dawn with Sgt. Ryu Yi-gang, he couldn't stand his sexual harassment and assault, and after beating him, he took a knife and a rope and deserted. Then, he goes to visit General Hwang, who has been discharged from the military, and uploads a brutal cartoon on the bus to Seongnam, where Hwang Jang-soo's house is located. At Seongnam Terminal, he meets the 103rd Division and Subangsa DP Team, but at the terminal they beat everyone except Han Ho-yeol and fights at the cinema. Han Ho-yeol was removed. After that, he went to Hwang Jang-soo's house and tried to take revenge, but Hwang Jang-soo lured Chuck Jo Seok-bong at home and struck him in the back with a baseball bat, knocking him down. Seok-bong, who first met Hwang Jang-soo, was trembling at first because of the past that had plagued him throughout his military life, but after overcoming that fear with madness, he cuts off Hwang Jang-soo's left hand with a sword and runs away. Immediately after that, he goes down the stairs with a huge smile, but is caught by DP Joe waiting at the entrance of Jang-soo Hwang's apartment. However, he gets tied up in Park Bum-gu's car and gets into a car accident while being transported, and then goes back to Hwang Jang-soo's house.

After subduing and kidnapping him at Hwang Jang-soo's house, he kidnapped him into a North Korean tunnel located in the basement of a tunnel that was used as a canter course for the military police, and then beats him to death. Jun-ho, who follows Han Ho-yeol, talks about Jo Seok-bong's school pupil and tries to have a conversation. Jo Seok-bong, too, was a little distracted by the story of his academy student, and with tears in his eyes, there were signs of a return to the good days of the past. But soon after, the special forces attack with guns, which stimulates Jo Seok-bong, and the possibility of dialogue or conciliation disappears. In the end, Jang-soo Hwang is unable to kill and attempts suicide with a pistol stolen from the police. The news screen from the cookie video only states that he attempted suicide, and it appears that he did not die immediately, as he was transported to a military hospital. And in the news, it was said that he had been managed within the unit as a soldier of interest, but seeing that he was the focus of absurdity without receiving separate management from the executive throughout the drama, it seems that this part was falsely announced to the outside by the military for evasion.

Quotes[]

Pretending to be... Knowing everything... Everyone was by the way... Why do I have to be punished? The bad guy is that Fu**ing bastard! Why do I have to be punished! Why!!
~ Jo Seok-bong expressing his anger towards the bystanders after being arrested by D.P.
Ha, isn't there a canteen in our unit? Do you know what is written there? 1953. It was used in 6.25. The canteen doesn't change either.
~ Seok-bong critical of the absurdity of the South Korean military.

Trivia[]

  • Jo Seok-bong did commit suicide at the end, but it seems he didn't die given that he was taken to a military hospital, but if D.P's season 2 comes out, he's possible Redeemed.
