~ Joan to Charles |
Joan Berkeley is a major antagonist in Season 4 of CW's Riverdale. She was one of the most talented students at Stonewall Preps and a member of the Quill and Skulls.
She is portrayed by Doralynn Mui.
Biography[]
Joan is first seen attending a book discussion of Moby Dick at Stonewall Prep along with classmates Donna Sweett and Jonathan, when Bret Weston Wallis introduces them to a new student named Jughead Jones.
On Halloween night, Donna drugs Jughead and she, Bret, Jonathan and Joan lock him in a coffin overnight as a prank. When their teacher Mr. Chipping lets Jughead out the next morning, Bret claims it's a Stonewall Prep tradition that shouldn't be taken seriously.
Later, Joan and her classmates witness Mr. Chipping jumping out a window to his death, reacting apathetically when Jughead panicked and said they should call an ambulence.
They summon Jughead to the woods where they officially recruit him into their secret society called the Quill and Skulls of which Bret is the leader. They give Jughead an honorary pin hidden inside a skull that Jughead smashes and have him record an initiation tape like all newcomers. They all sit around in a circle and share private information about their respective pasts.
After Jughead gets kicked out of Stonewall Prep for supposedly plagiarizing his story, Bret invites him to an Idles of March party which is really a trap by the preppies to kill him. Bret and Jughead face off in a duel in the woods, during which Joan sneaks up behind Jughead and smashes a rock on his head seemingly killing him. Donna then plants the rock in the hands of Jughead's girlfriend Betty Cooper, framing her for the murder. Joan, Donna, Bret and Francis DuPont attend Jughead's funeral at the Cooper house, but are kicked out.
Jughead suddenly turns up alive at Stonewall Prep, as the blow was cushioned by his beanie and he was faking his death for weeks to uncover the secrets of Stonewall Prep. He and Betty lock everyone inside and explain how every year Stonewall Prep chooses a new student to kill so they can write a story about it. Suddenly, they are joined by Jughead's father FP and grandfather Forsythe and Betty's half-brother Charles. Forscythe explains that he was almost one of DuPont's victims when DuPont sole credit for the "Baxter Brothers" book series, but that he escaped Stonewall Prep to protect his family. To avoid being exposed as a fraud, DuPont throws himself out the window the same way Chipping died.
When Charles brings the preppies in for questioning, Joan reveals she has diplomatic immunity because her father is an embassador and so is allowed to leave the country without charges. However, Charles eventually kills Joan as revenge, ironically by smashing a rock on her head the same way she tried to kill Jughead.
Personality[]
Joan is very spoiled and arrogant, taking advantage of her father being an embassador to get away with her actions. When she was brought into the FBI office for questioning, she refused to take any responsibility for nearly killing Jughead and claimed diplomatic immunity just to avoid prison. She's also shown to be unsympathetic to others, as she didn't care about Mr. Chipping's suicide even though he was her teacher and didn't bother to help Jughead when Bret was insulting his family.
