Joanne Ostler is the main antagonist of "The Equation", the sixth episode of Fringe.
He is portrayed by Gillian Jacobs.
History[]
Joanne Ostler was assigned by Mitchell Loeb to kidnap a musical prodigy named Ben Stockton. This was so he could solve an equation that would allow him to create a device capable of reaching through solid matter.
Ostler did so by pretending that her car stopped working in the middle of a road in Middletown, Connecticut. When Ben’s father, Jeremy, saw her, he offered to help. However, when checked the engine, a light on it flashed in a green, green, green, red sequence, hypnotizing Jeremy. With him in a trance, Ostler kidnapped Ben. This was actually her third kidnapped victim.
Thanks to Jeremy’s descriptions, Charlie Francis was able to identify Joanne Ostler. Meanwhile, Ostler attempts to trick Ben into completing the equation, saying that it was music and using a machine, makes him believe his mother is with him. Peter Bishop discovered that Ostler used the name “Joanne Ritz” for a P.O. Box in Clarksburg.
Eventually, Olivia and Charlie entered the warehouse they were in. Olivia found Ben in the basement strapped to a chair, but before she can free him, Ostler attacked her from behind resulting in a fight. Ostler manages to use the lights on a device hers to escape. She had the full equation, so Olivia returned Ben to Jeremy.
The finished equation worked as Mitchell Loeb tested it by reaching through a safe to get an apple. Joanne Ostler was surprised, but Loeb, no longer having any use for her, shoots and kills her. Loeb then went on to use the technology to get some equipment to have David Robert Jones escape prison.
Trivia[]
- The colored pattern she used as lights were seen in many episodes, like on the hat of John Mosley. However, this episode was the only time it was specifically referenced in the show.
- It is unknown if Ostler is an official member of ZFT or just someone that Loeb hired.
