Joseph “Joe" Connolly is the titular villainous main protagonist of the 2021 animated series Dodo. He is a young British boy in year 7 student at O'Malley High School, he is Frisbo and Pete Wilson's best friend and Lilly Scott's boyfriend.
He is voiced by Dylan Llewellyn.
Personality[]
Joe is a selfish young boy who is completely willing to sacrifice the wellbeing of others, including his friends, for his own benefit. This is shown multiple times through out the series especially with Frisbo, his pettiness even got himself Frisbo and Pete arrested at one point. Joe is also something of a ladies man as shown in multiple episodes with him even getting a couple girlfriends in the process.
He does however over time grow genuine feelings for Lilly Scott with Lilly also doing the same. Joe always feels regret if Lilly gets hurt or in trouble in any form of way believing he could of stopped her from getting into that problem. However, Joe can take his feelings for her too far such as when he put a picture of her on the faces of historical figures wifes as part of a history project which would cause Lilly great amounts of humiliation and when he willing betrayed Frisbo so he could continue talking to Lilly by refusing to break up with Kayla Madani for him. Joe is also incredibly cowardly as shown several times though he is surprisingly good in hand to hand combat as shown in the episode Mickey Page when Steve Malek sets both Joe and Frisbo up.
Some of his behaviour might stem from the abuse of his older brother Jamie Connolly, whom would physically and emotionally bully Joe growing up even calling him worthless at one point. It's also heavily implied the reason he does a lot of what he does is to earn his older sibling respect. He does have standards though as he shows disgust as Steve Malek plan to turn the school into living hell despite knowing that betraying someone like Steve will get his friends hurt in the future. He is also easily manipulated as shown a few times, a prime example being Steve Malek whom pretended to be Joe friend for his own selfish gains despite Steve previous actions towards Joe and Joe even being warned about Steve beforehand.
Overall, Joe is more of a misguided idiot with a large ego than truly evil like Steve Malek. His insecurities also contribute to this.
Appearance[]
He is a normal looking, white skinned and handsome looking child though he has slightly messy brown hair. For his main school uniform which he is seen in for the majority of the show, he has a black blazer, which underneath has a plain white shirt which similar to Frisbo and Steve he leaves untucked, with like every other student at O.Malley wears a black and yellow tie, wears black shoes with white socks and wears a orange backpack on his back.
When at home, he wears dinosaur pyjamas including shirt and trousers and blue slippers. When going on a date with Lilly in the episode Girlfriend, he is seen wearing a blue and yellow stripe shirt and normal blue Jeans.
Trivia[]
- He claims to have read 7 poems before the start of the series 5 of which are about Dodos.
- His favourite sweets are fried eggs, which are also his brother Jamie's favourites as well.
- Joe has had approximately 3 girlfriends, Hot Molley, Sobhan Murphy (accidentally though) and the only one he genuinely loved, Lilly Scott.
- A running gag in the series, is that he and his friends mistake Leonard DiCaprio and Leonardo Da Vinci for each other. This is best shown in the episode Tadpoles, when Frisbo tried to give Joe advice on flirting with girls and uses DiCaprio and his character Jack Dawson from the Titanic as an example of a "ladies man" (at least in Frisbo's opinion) only for Joe to reply: " You mean the artist that became a legend from painting, flirted with rich gals, surving a sunken ship and lived for hundreds of years. I know who your talking about Friz Da Vinci not DiCaprio whom died donkey years ago not that many people saw much value in him." This joke, left the shows creator Jack Bennet slightly worried that the Oscar winning legend would be offended by the joke and even take the creator of the show to court. However this didn't happen and DiCaprio has never commented on his thoughts about the said joke. Also, the production team allegedly didn't have the permission to reference the famous actor as he is mentioned many times on the show especially in season 1's second half.
- Chris Ashby, was originally considered the role for Joe but he dropped out of the role for unknown reasons and was replaced with Dylan Llewellyn. There are even, leaked footage of him recording his lines all the way back in 2017.
