Joe Camber is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Frank Dodd) of Stephen King’s 1981 novel Cujo.
He was the abusive husband of Charity Camber and father of Brett Camber. He is also friend of Gary Pervier and a mechanic and the owner of an auto shop, who was supposed to be secretly going on a trip with his friend, Gary to Boston, only to have caused his dog Cujo to go crazy without a cure, which led to his rabid attack.
He was portrayed by the late Ed Lauter who also played Mr. Kubat in Under Wraps.
Joe Camber is a mechanic that lives in a farm near Castle Rock. He lives with his wife, his son, and his son's dog Cujo. He is a typical "stiff macho" man. He goes hunting with his friends, he is abusive to his wife and is a bad influence on Brett.
On the day Charity won the lottery she buys him a gift. She wants to visit her sister Holly with Brett. Joe refuses to let her go and gets ready to strap her. Charity stands up to Joe and assures him she will make her son hate him. Joe then lets her go with Brett. That night Joe and Charity makes love. Charity is scared to make any sounds because she assumes he doesn't know if women make sounds with sex.
On the day they are leaving, Joe tells Brett that his uncle (Holly's husband) is a bad man. He sends him off with bad thoughts.
When he comes home he sees a large dog poop. He is shocked by this because Cujo never would've poop like that. Wandering around he goes Gary's house. He sees Gary's corpse in there. Moments later a rabid Cujo attacks him and kills him.
Personality[]
Joe is violent, abusive, narrow-minded, stupid and sexist. He hates rich people and influences his son in a bad way. He is careless and selfish. His decision to not vaccinate Cujo was the reason Cujo could get rabid in the first place.
Trivia[]
In the book, Joe is not afraid of dogs, but the idea of a dog getting contracted with rabies really terrifies him.
Joe is considered the Greater-Scope Villain, because if he had not have refused to give Cujo a cure for his rabid disease, then the St. Bernard would not have went insane.
However, the other Greater-Scope Villain is Frank Dodd, because it has been theorized that his spirit had possessed Cujo after he was contacted with rabies from the bats.
