Joe Ellery is a minor antagonist in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, appearing in the episodes "Can't Be Held Accountable", "Must Be Held Accountable" and "People Vs Richard Wheatley". He was a corrupt judge and statutory rapist.
He was portrayed by Rocco Sisto.
Biography[]
Ellery was known to let suspects off the hook easily, hench the nickname "Let 'Em Go Joe". This was shown when he dismissed the charges of rape against Steve Getz because of the latter mistakenly thinking the girls were old enough to have sex. After the father of the girls Getz raped was kidnapped, an investigation into why Ellery dismissed the charges and it was discovered that Getz had a recording of Ellery having sex with a seventeen-year-old girl. He had used this as leverage over him to get him to dismiss the charges. After he was arrested by the SVU, Ellery agreed to go undercover to stop Getz and they were able to arrest both him, his attorney Peter Abrams and his girlfriend Granya Marcil.
Despite all the evidence against him, Ellery still remained a judge and held the case against Richard Wheatley for Kathy Stabler's murder. However, Ellery had forgone his reputation of letting people off easily and he took the case seriously. This was most notably seen when he held Detective Elliot Stabler after the latter had questioned if he was on Wheatley's payroll.
