Joe "Mental" Mentalino is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside J.P. Shay) of the 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. He is the sadistic henchman of the main antagonist, Nicholas Andre, who tries to kill Harry and Lloyd
He was portrayed by Mike Starr, who also portrayed Leo "Lips" Moceri in Kill the Irishman.
Biography[]
Joe Mentalino was hired by Nicholas Andre along with J.P. Shay to collect Mary Swanson's ransom money, which was then mistakenly taken by Lloyd Christmas at the airport. Mental and Shay then break into Lloyd's apartment and decapitate his friend Harry Dunne's pet parakeet Petey.
Eventually, Mental and Shay catch up to Harry and Lloyd, who were staying at a honeymoon motel. As Mental is on the phone with Andre, he punches an impatient man who wanted to use the phone.
The next day, Mental poses as a hitchhiker and gets picked up by Harry and Lloyd on the road while Shay follows them in her car. As the group stop at a diner, Mental dares Harry and Lloyd to eat spicy peppers before going outside to use the payphone, informing Andre that he plans to kill them with rat poison pills.
However, Harry and Lloyd put some peppers in Mental's burger. When Mental sits down, he inquires casually about the briefcase, to which Harry and Lloyd reveal they don't know who owns it and are just returning it.
Realizing these two are not criminal masterminds, Mental jokingly says they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and then eats the burger, causing his stomach ulcer to flare up.
Mental then orders Harry and Lloyd to feed him his medication, but Harry accidently feeds Mental the rat poison pills, killing him and unknowingly avenging Petey's death. His body was eventually discovered by the police and taken away.
