~ Poletti in interrogation. |
Joe Poletti is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Prodigy". Poletti is a paroled serial rapist and later the rapist and killer of one of his colleagues, Officer Pam Tilden, and a witness, Ed Boggs.
He was portrayed by Brian Sullivan.
Biography[]
Poletti had a lengthy history of rape, his first arrest being at age 18. He then raped 14-year-old Coral Jividen after his release, failing to lie she was his girlfriend. Weeks after that release from prison, he raped five women at knifepoint during home invasions, serving his longest prison sentence to date. Poletti's final release left him lying on his resume to hide his criminal record so he'd be hired by the Manhattan Federation for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, working shifts at the kennels of rescued and brutalized pets and other animals. Poletti appeared to never reoffend for three years, but he fixated on Officer Pam Tilden and wanted to rape her as well. He eventually snapped, lured her to a park with a call about an injured animal, and then knocked her out with a rock to rape her. Not wanting her to testify against him so he wouldn't go back to prison, he stabbed Pam to death, then cut off her head and hands to prevent her identification. Ed Boggs was peeing on a tree nearby, so Poletti slammed his face into the trunk, then stabbed him too. Ed was posed over a naked Pam and had lipstick smeared on his face to make the look like a couple. Poletti then left Pam's body parts at multiple power plants and shoved into drainage systems.
Poletti bought time by framing Harry Baker, a teenage sociopath and animal killer with multiple run-ins with the law and with Pam. But when Poletti's own record was discovered, he was arrested. He refused to confess, so when it was found he wrote violent pornographic material to distribute to other sex offenders, which was a violation of his parole, he was tried for that. The jury was horrified enough to find him guilty, which got him a year in prison. The detectives took the opportunity to find his van he used to transport Pam's remains, and the trace evidence let to a plant in New Jersey where her head was abandoned. Her head wasn't found, but Pam's commemorative golden dog earring was on the grounds, confirmed with its engravings, her DNA, and Poletti's thumbprint. Detective Elliot Stabler confronted Poletti, who was speechless, in prison, saying he'd get at least 25 more years added to his sentence.
