~ Joe to Joyce after raping Adaline. |
Joseph "Joe" Pratt Sr. is the secondary antagonist in the seven-issue comic book series Crossed: Family Values, being the main antagonist of the first half while his wife, Joyce Pratt becomes so for the rest of the comic run.
The monstrous religious fanatic patriarch of the Pratt family and owner of his horse breeding ranch, Joe was believed to be a man of faith who deeply loved his family. Beneath his façade, Joe was secretly abusing his family, and mainly focused on raping his daughters except for his oldest, Adaline. Upon the Crossed coming into the world, Joe created New Paradise where he led a group of survivors, and started impregnating women and his daughters. He was killed by his wife Joyce upon raping Adaline by infecting herself with the C-virus, thus ending his abuse for good.
History[]
Past[]
Not much is given about Joseph Pratt's life before the apocalypse, but what is known is that he has a brother named Eli, and at some point he married a woman named Joyce and they had ten children together, none of which were likely consensual. Sometime later, Joe began his own race horse breeding farm which became very successful and profitable, and built his ranch in Lincolnton from nothing.
Despite being married however, Joe would repeatedly rape four of his daughters, not including Adaline, and abuse the rest of his children to the point where Joyce was too afraid to ever stop him since he likely did the same to her for several years. Joe would mainly focus on raping Emily, and also committed the act with his oldest son Joseph Pratt Jr., who revealed this to Adaline when he became infected himself. Despite trying to keep his incestuous nature a secret, Joe's employee Randy knew of his actions but didn't tell the authorities for unknown reasons, possibly being bribed or intimidated into keeping quiet by Joe. The only member of the Pratt family that stood up to him was Adaline, and Joe never raped her presumably because of this.
Issue #1[]
After 17 years of keeping quiet due to being afraid of her father, Adaline asks Joe to privately meet her in the kitchen where she tells him to stop raping her sister Emily, and Joe punches her to the ground for simply asking him to stop. Joyce steps in to see what's going on, but then Joe orders her to leave before he mercilessly beats his daughter with a belt.
Outside, the horses are all suddenly spooked by something and one of their workers is injured after being kicked in the chest. Infuriated at the abuse, Adaline gets her gun from her closet initially intending on killing her father, but then stops her plans once she sees The Crossed crowded outside their ranch in a giant mob as far as 100 yards (300 feet).
Joe gathers all his workers and sons to start firing into the crowd of maniacs and during the madness, he realizes that while they're not being attacked by some violent cult, he believes that the end of days has begun with a pestilence designed to kill all the sinners of the world.
When Adaline sees Emily run into the barn, she quickly finds that she's been infected and the Crossed Emily nearly kills Adaline until Joe shoots her in the head, and takes the rest of his living family far away from their home. Adaline briefly forgives her father for seemingly caring enough to save her.
Issue #2[]
One year later into the apocalypse, Joe has started his own base of survivors which he's dubbed "New Paradise", where he quickly learned everything he could about the Crossed, allowed travelers to join their home, and hanged anyone accused of "dissention". One of the other things Joe focused on was the repopulation of the human race and to do this, Joe personally sought out to impregnate as many women as he could, including his underaged daughter Kayleen without anyone else knowing.
In order to study the Crossed, Joe has captured one of the Crossed as it was chasing a group of survivors by shooting it in the leg and then dismembering it to collect the fluids for study. Joe tells Adaline and her two oldest brothers, Joseph and Matthew, to scout out the areas surrounding the camp to see if any Crossed are too close to their home. While outside though, she realizes that the morbid rhyme that the Crossed man they held captive always repeated meant that Joe was raping his daughters once again and she rushes back.
After arriving, Adaline finds Joe sleeping with her sister Hannah and forces Joe at gun point to take her to Kayleen where he reveals to her that while she was gone, Kayleen was infected by the Crossed.
Issue #3[]
Joe explains to Adaline that while she was gone, Kayleen had somehow managed to get infected, and they tied her to the same board as the previous Crossed man. Adaline insults Joe and he once again abuses her by slamming her head against a wall and then locks her inside a cell. Adaline tries to convince her mother that what Joe is doing is abhorrent, but Joyce is still disillusioned by her religious faith and fear of her husband, attempting to justify his actions saying God personally chose him to lead the new world.
Meanwhile, a large group of the Crossed has used their tracking skills from a pile of the Pratt's horse's dung to make their way to New Paradise. Adaline tells her father that she wishes the incoming horde kills them all as it is no paradise at all, just "the insanity of a sick old f*ck who likes to screw little girls", and Joe punches her in the face once again. Adaline laughs at her father and Joe suspects she's possessed by the Devil, and Adaline questions if that is why he's never tried to rape her or because he knew she's the only one who would fight back against him.
Out of pure spite, Joe proceeds to rape Adaline and tells her that she's not his daughter and plans on using Crossed blood to "reveal her true form", but Joyce luckily discovers what Joe has done to their oldest daughter and helps her outside of the cage before locking herself and Joe back inside. Joe demands that she unlock the cage in order for him to help the others survive, but Joyce finally stands up to him and tells Adaline to save their remaining family before infecting herself with Crossed blood and kills Joe by raping him with a butcher knife attached to her groin and stabbing him in the head.
Issue #5[]
Joe makes a brief posthumous appearance when Adaline finds his now mutilated body within Joyce's Crossed camp, where it was crucified onto a tree, a cruel joke from The Crossed about his extreme religious beliefs.
Issue #7[]
Joe is last mentioned by his infected son Joseph Pratt, where he reveals that he would sometimes join his father in raping his sisters in the barn even before the C-Virus epidemic.
Personality[]
At first, Joe appears to be a faithful Christian man who earned his living by building his ranch from nothing, and loves his family deeply. He is shown to be capable leader, gaining the trust of many survivors while heading New Paradise in Minnesota. Additionally, Joe is naturally intelligent and cunning, being able to trick Adaline into going on missions to watch for Crossed while he committed his acts in private. Despite his intellect and cunningness, Joe usually relied on his intimidating size and strength to keep people in line when they questioned his authority, being able to gain the respect when he became the leader of survivors.
When his true natured is revealed, Joe is shown to be a delusional, abusive, apathetic and psychotic man who likes keeping his family in line by all means. His controlling behavior stems to having his way by abusing his family, but showed caution when dealing with his oldest. He is notably callous and amoral, and isn't bothered by committing the act of incest or sexual assault on his daughters, or being confronted for his actions by Adaline. When being interrupted while committing the act with his daughter Hannah, he tells Adaline that she is "upsetting" God's work.
By becoming the leader of New Paradise, Joe became more arrogant, egotistical and delusional, believing himself to be God's prophet and that he is doing God's will. His delusions extended into seeing Adaline as not his daughter, believing that she had the devil in her. Pratt was also a wrathful and spiteful man, slapping Adaline when she confronted him on raping Emily, or raping Adaline out of spite for stating that he didn't rape her because she would kill him.
