Joel Deering is a fictional character and major antagonist of the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street. He debuted on 7th September 2023 and started out as a supporting character before later becoming the show's main antagonist in 2024.

In his storyline, Joel is a lawyer who became colleagues with established character Dee-Dee Bailey and soon developed a relationship with her over the following months. They soon worked together in a case regarding the mysterious disappearance of young resident Lauren Bolton. However, it is soon revealed that Joel was responsible for the crime after he brutally attacked Lauren in an attempt to kill her to hide the fact he slept with her beforehand - which in turn led to the birth of their son Frankie later on.

He is portrayed by Calum Lill.

Biography[]

Joel Deering first came to Weatherfield in early September 2023. He soon became acquainted with fellow solicitor Dee-Dee Bailey and the pair form a close relationship with each other.

In early 2024, the street is shocked when young resident Lauren Bolton goes missing after her personal problems continue to dampen from time to time. It was then cafe owner Roy Cropper is accused of being responsible and he is jailed for months under suspicion of her murder. Consequently, he is targeted by gang leader Griff Reynolds in his path for revenge. At the same time, fellow neighbour Daniel Osbourne is also suspected of being involved in Lauren's disappearance whereas his girlfriend Bethany Platt believes that her abusive rapist Nathan Curtis is responsible due to his infamous status. Eventually Nathan is arrested on suspicion of being the culprit and Roy is released from prison.

However, it is soon revealed that Joel is actually the one responsible for Lauren's disappearance. This happened when he confronted Lauren at her hideout and brutally attacked her with a metal object, presumably killing her in the process. It was later revealed that Lauren survived the attack and is pregnant with Joel's baby, fearing he'll be exposed, he drugs Lauren with abortion pills in an attempt to kill the baby and locks her in his apartment. Lauren later collapses in pain and gives birth prematurely to a baby boy.

The following month, Dee-Dee still being unaware of Joel's sinister side, visits Emily (Joel's ex-wife) so that she could give his daughter, Maeve a charm for her bracelet that Joel claims he got her. Emily reveals that Maeve never had a bracelet as the receipt that Dee-Dee found was actually for Lauren's necklace, which Joel lied about. Emily warned Dee-Dee to be careful as Joel was still paying rent for his old apartment (which he was using to house Lauren). Dee-Dee becomes suspicious and follows Joel to the hospital where she finds Joel demanding Lauren to be quiet about their relationship.

Dee-Dee then realises that Joel is the baby's father and breaks down in tears over his lies. She then waits for Joel to leave the room so she could demand the truth from Lauren who then breaks down in tears and confesses the truth to Dee-Dee, revealing that Joel groomed and attacked her much to her disgust. She then breaks off her engagement with Joel and then accompanied Lauren to the police station, but Joel was already there. DS Swain then arrests Joel for suspicion of GBH, and DC Kit Green then mentions the abortion pills which infuriates Lauren and disgusts Dee Dee.
