Ser Joffrey Dayne is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its TV adaptation, Game of Thrones. He was a knight of House Dayne who participated in the First Dornish War against Aegon I Targaryen.
Biography[]
Nothing is known about Ser Joffrey Dayne's past, but at an unknown point, he became a knight himself. During the First Dornish War in 10 AC, as Aegon the Conqueror tried to conquer Dorne by burning the seats of various Dornish lords, this caused the Dornish to retaliate by invading the realm. Lord Fowler and his army launched a swift invasion of the Reach and began burning a dozen villages before capturing the castle of Nightsong, the seat of House Caron.
In response, Lord Manfred Hightower sends his son Ser Addam with a strong host to retake Nightsong from Lord Fowler. However, after Addam and the Hightower host had departed, Joffrey Dayne marched an army from his family's seat of Starfall on Oldtown, but as the city's walls were too strong and impenetrable to breach, Joffrey and his army began burning fields, farms, and villages for twenty leagues around the city.
This caused Lord Hightower's younger son Garmon to lead a sortie against Joffrey, but he was slain by the latter. Meanwhile, though Lord Caron and his family were captured and taken captive by Lord Fowler, Ser Addam Hightower decided to return home to relieve Oldtown instead of pursuing his enemy.
Unfortunately, by the time he returned, Joffrey Dayne and his army had already melted away into the mountains. While all of Oldtown was left outraged by the recent attack, Queen Visenya Targaryen has her dragon Vhagar burn Starfall as retaliation for Joffrey's raids.
Game of Thrones[]
Joffrey Dayne was born to House Dayne at an unknown date. He managed to become worthy of wielding Dawn, his family's ancestral sword, and holding the title of Sword of the Morning. During the First Dornish War, when Aegon the Conqueror demanded that he and House Dayne surrender to House Targaryen, Ser Joffrey defiantly responded by marching an army to Oldtown, where Aegon had been crowned king.
Trivia[]
- In the short episode House Dayne of the Histories & Lore series, Joffrey Dayne is shown wielding Dawn. This indicates that he must have held the famous title of Sword of the Morning, though this was never mentioned in the novels and is likely a dramatization.
