“ | Why should this old man make an exception of the humans and save only them? Why should I ever go to the effort? That is not to say I have an aversion to the act of salvation itself. But aren’t you disrespecting my existence as an individual if you demand I unconditionally save all of humanity? And if you wish to take a truly philanthropic view, then you must consider all life on the planet as equally valuable. When you view humanity as just one of many species, it is clearly the most sinful of the bunch. Kah kah kah. Bah!? Philanthropy!? Hwa ha ha ha ha ha!! How much wisdom did you draw on to kill the fearsome tigers and crocodiles for their skins? You say it is wrong to hunt elephants for their ivory, but tell me what humanity has done while this old man has slept!? Humanity has scattered its sin across the face of the planet, humanity has run around attempting to clean up its own mess, and after all is said and done, humanity has criticized its own actions as if that alone is enough to redefine the concepts of good and evil!! | „ |
~ Andreae's infamous rant. |
Johann Valentin Andreae, also known as "Christian Rosencreutz" or CRC, is one of the overarching antagonists of the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
He is a German abbot who was the author of Chymische Hochzeit and the creator of the legends of Christian Rosencreutz, which influenced Rosicrucianism. Intially believing himself to be the forerunner of the movement, Andreae was overshadowed by his creation, which became more famous than him. After losing control of his creation and left in obscurity, Andreae sought to tarnish CRC's legacy out of pure envy. He is also Touma Kamijou's fourth archenemy and the arch-nemesis of the Bridge Builders Cabal.
Appearance[]
After being summoned into the world, Andreae appeared as an eighteen-year old young man with long silver hair and a beard. He is seen wearing a crismon red robe with a variant of the Rose Cross on it. He also wore a pentagonal pendant, with an emblem of red and white pentagons inside one another - similar to the one in the Rose Cross variant on his robes, and a red cloak with gold-orange lining.
Personality[]
Andreae is a very callous, self-obsessed, and egomaniacal sociopath who desires to be the center of attention above anything else. His main motivation is jealousy from his completely invented character becoming famous and leaving him in obscurity. He originally created the legendary figure Christian Rosencreutz and the movement of Rosicrucianism just to gain widespread eminence from the masses. However, after he confessed about his lies and the false book he wrote about, the Rosicrucian movement continued on without him and left him to be forgotten. He then impersonates CRC to tarnish the legend that persisted after his death and eventually eclipsed him.
While posing as Christian Rosencreutz, Andreae displayed a malevolent persona completely different from the wise holy man of legend, in an effort to tarnish his creation's legacy. He was shown to be extremely cruel, sadistic, arrogant, hedonistic and malicious, taking massive amounts of enjoyment from the massacre he caused during his rampage. Similar to Anna Sprengel, Andreae gets easily bored and doesn't try very hard to defend himself or retaliate due to his belief that things will work out in his favor.
Biography[]
Johann Valentin Andreae was an abbot in Germany born in the late 16th century and lived through the first half of the 17th century. He would write a false book called Chymische Hochzeit which described the completely history of "Christian Rosencreutz", a legendary miracle worker and magician who traveled the world, healing people and gathering knowledge. These legends eventually led to the creation of Rosicrucianism and the Rosicrucian Order.
With this newfound success, Johann became highly convinced that he was the very center of the entire movement which grew from his stories. However, his own creation would later leave his control and become even bigger than him. Andreae then confessed that it was a lie, calming that the Chymische Hochzeit was written by him when he was nineteen year old. He was ignored by others, however, with the Rosicrucian movement growing into something beyond him and later would survive in the modern era, despite Andreae's claim that confessing to the prank ended the dream.
Eventually, Andreae would grow extremely envious and resentful towards his own invention that eclipsed him, seeking to utterly tarnish the legend of Christian Rosencreutz that he himself had created.
Abilities[]
- Rosicrucian Magic: As the de-facto founder of Rosicrucianism, Andreae has extensive training in the usage of Rosicrucian-based magic and techniques, mainly those derived from the legends of his creation, Christian Rosencreutz.
- Carbon Manipulation: Andreae's main offensive magic, which is described as a rehash of St. Germain's Chambord. He utilizes this to create "diamond bullets" that resembles a black coal the size of a golf ball which he fires from his palm. These bullets, though small, are highly destructive and lethal, able to take down a Transcendent-level opponent in a single shot, and moving extremely fast to see. Aside from the bullets, Andreae could use his carbon manipulation for other purposes, such as forcing an Anti-Skill officer to count on his fingers, crushing them in the process.
- Reanimation: By using his carbon magic, Andreae managed to reanimate the corpse of Alice Anotherbible to use against Anna Kingsford.
- Regeneration: Andreae managed to regenerate his severed arm by gathering nearby rubble and debris and formed a new arm with the command "Mend". This is described as repairing by creating something new instead of a resurrection that returned him to normal.
- Red Elixir: Andreae could make several inorganic objects combine to create a giant doll by invoking the red elixir that conquers all diseases and manipulates lifespans. However, the doll was destroyed before it could do anything.
- Citrinitas: Andreae used Citrinitas to create a massive amount of yellow sand that dissolves and traps its victims into the sand as nutrients. Unlike the previous user of this spell, Darris Hewlane, Andreae doesn't use a spiritual item to activate the effects. Instead, he simulated rocking something and verbally invoked the yellow symbol which symbolizes transformation beyond decomposition with the role of fermentation.
- Clouds: Andreae is able to utilize the Rosicrucian symbol of Clouds, which are said to conceal wisdom and truth from those who are unworthy, to explosively discharge a white steam and within the space covered by that cloud, not be hit by regular attacks even from point-blank range or with a dense scattershot filling the space (compared to trying attack the non-observable Schrödinger's cat). He was also able to use his control of clouds to disrupt that opponent's similar weather-based attack by blowing between two fingers to send one cloud at another, forcibly altering weather conditions and diverting a lightning strike.
Equipment[]
- Crystal World Map: Andreae can utilize this spiritual item to create a Miniature Garden, a model based on how the world Rosencreutz viewed, accurately recreating all phenomena, all things relating to the world's past, present and future, to calculate any answer desired.
- Eternal Lamp: An old glass lamp, based on the undying flame said to have illuminated the vault. The energy contained within the lamp is described as an inextinguishable light and just releasing a small amount can turn a soft glow into a crimson torrent of flames, which consumes all oxygen from the air and is capable of melting concrete.
- Red Powder: When Coronzon's wings caused the surroundings to blacken and rot, Andreae used a flask of red powder, which when scattered and invoked by the word "revolution", made the black vanish and the air grow clean, described as full of negative ions and like deep in a forest. If not contained by a sudden phase shift, it could have caused the city in the outside world to decay and be buried in nothing but trees.
- Tarot Cards: During his battle with Touma's dragon, Andreae used a deck of Tarot cards which he then spread out in a full circle in mid-air and invoked by the secret spell of 'Rota' (rearrangeable to 'Taro' and thus convertible into the 78 cards which indicate the 10 spheres and 22 pathways of the Sephiroth). With the cards invoked as the proper entrance to light pouring down from beyond the tree - from the Ain Soph Aur, Ain Soph and Ain, a great beam of light was produced from the center of the card circle, which temporarily split the dragon's maw in two.
- Pneuma-less Shell: Like Anna Sprengel, Andreae is able to use the Pneuma-less Shell to produce random objects with various effects related to their symbolism. In Andreae's case, he can draw out the symbolism from items representing the oldest forms of types of death, such as stone tools, wooden sticks, uranium and numerous others. Additionally, Andreae could mass produce and remotely activate multiple Pneuma-less Shells at once by grasping a mother device with a ruby shine which corresponds to the female symbol of the red rose paired with the cross.
- Rose Cross Sword: Andreae wielded a 1m long gold cross with rose vines wrapped around it as a physical weapon.
