“ | It was one like us that found it, a thing of shifting names and deja-vu. A fool, that believed because it found the coffin in chains, it would be an easy thing to control, to bargain with. But there was no remorse when the test finally failed, and it fed on the thing that considered itself the master. No face to change in the cold, dark earth, no eye to fool where it is now. | „ |
~ Breekon describing John. |
John is a minor antagonist of the Rusty Quill horror podcast The Magnus Archives, serving as the main antagonist of Mag 2: Do Not Open. He was a shapeshifting servant of the godlike entity known as the Stranger, who one day found a coffin connecting to another entity called the Buried. Believing he could control the coffin, John tricked several people into being consumed by it, before being consumed by it himself after one of his intended victims was able to survive.
Appearance[]
John was described as a small man with an odd density. He was clean-shaven and had brownish hair.
Personality[]
John seemed to be an egotistical man, who underestimated the forces around him, and showed no care for those he killed in the name of furthering his own power. Despite this, he was somewhat persuasive and charming, if a bit off-putting. Despite his notable lack of empathy, he did respect those he considered intelligent.
Biography[]
John apparently existed for some time before coming across the coffin, changing his name constantly. At some point in time, he found the coffin of the Buried and believed that because it was chained, it would be easy to control. Hoping to use it to spread fear, he enlisted Breekon and Hope to help him carry it around and feed people to it.
In Amsterdam, John met a British tourist named Josua Gillespie and, pretending to be British himself, offered the man £10,000 in cash to keep it in his house. Josua agreed and kept it there for several months. Eventually, John, Breekon, and Hope came to Joshua's apartment to take back the coffin, believing it had consumed the man. To their surprise, Joshua had outsmarted the coffin and was still alive, and the hungry artifact ate John as a consequence.
