Professor John Garvey is the secondary antagonist of Ashley Winstead's debut novel In My Dreams I Hold A Knife. Garvey is a former economics professor at Duquette University, as well as a serial rapist of students, including protagonist Jessica Miller, in the interest of exploiting their academic and career endeavors, which led to his discreet dismissal.
Biography[]
Dr. Garvey, a tenured professor with a history of advising D.C. politicians, used his job to rape at least a dozen students at Duquette through coercion, most notably when he wrote recommendation letters for offices with available positions. Garvey raped Jessica by such an ultimatum after her murdered friend, Heather Shelby, had successfully been admitted before she was killed. When Jessica found out in horror Garvey wrote a sub-par evaluation of her, she tried to kill herself with an overdose. When that failed, her rage mixed with the high led her to shred Heather’s photo collages in their dorm room, then break into the Student Affairs office and steal the list of recommendations. When she went to her partner outside of her relationship, Brandon "Coop" Cooper, with all her accounts of the crimes and consequential events, Coop furiously broke into Garvey’s abode and painted "RAPIST" in every room. Those two burglaries happened the night Heather was murdered. When Jessica vaguely remembered she was covered in her blood from a cut on her leg from a window shard, and from heather when she was passed out in the room when Heather was murdered, she feared she killed Heather and told no one. Garvey, in the meantime, was exposed from an internal investigation by the college and was expelled and sent back to D.C. without any publicity to the crimes. All those secrets, crimes, and more came out when Heather’s brother Eric, who worked at the college to find answers on heather’s murder for ten years, confronted her circle of friends, his prime art list of suspects. Jessica’s boyfriend Mark "Mint" Minter was revealed to be Heather’s killer, having believed she was Jessica instead, and Eric killed Mint to avenge Heather.
