~ John Hartley to Nolan Booth.

John Hartley is the main villain protagonist of the 2021 film Red Notice.

While seemingly a noble FBI profiler seeking to clear his name, he is actually Sarah Black's lover and partner-in-crime.

He was played by former WWE wrestler Dwayne Johnson, who also played Mathayus the Scorpion King in The Mummy films, Sarge in Doom, Agent 23 in Get Smart, Terrorcon Cliffjumper in Transformers: Prime and Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe.

Biography[]

Hartley begins the film investigating a security breach at the Castel Sant'Angelo and exposing their jeweled egg of Cleopatra as a forgery by dissolving it in coca-cola. He fails to chase the thief, Nolan Booth, on foot, but later captures him in his hideout in Bali. However, the egg is stolen and Hartley is set up as the thief and thrown into a Russian prison, where he reunites with Booth. Hartley and Booth later meet with Booth's main competitor, Sarah "the Bishop" Black, who offers to recruit Booth.

Booth recruits Hartley to steal Cleopatra's second egg and they break out of jail. They take a private plane to Valencia to infiltrate a masquerade ball at the mansion of arms dealer Sotto Voce, where they find the second egg, as well as Black, who defeats them. Voce has them brought to a basement underneath a bullfight arena, where Black electrocutes Hartley until Booth tells him that the third egg is in an Egyptian pyramid. Black then knocks out Voce and Booth and Hartley escape. After a heartfelt conversation, Booth tells Hartley that the third egg is actually in a Argentinian jungle, having been smuggled there by Adolf Hitler's former art dealer, Rudolph Zeich.

After hours of searching, the duo uncover a Nazi bunker and uncover the third and final egg, but Black arrives and attempts to rob it from them. Interpol agents arrive and Booth, Hartley and Black escape in an antique Mercedes and dive the car over a waterfall. Booth briefly panics when it appears that Hartley was killed, but is relieved when he and Black turn out to be alive. He urges Hartley to arrest Black, but Hartley instead kisses her, to Booth's horror. Hartley reveals himself to be Black's partner-in-crime, having planned to con Booth into revealing the location of the third egg.

Black forces Booth to hand over the egg at gunpoint and Hartley handcuffs Booth to a tree, assuring him that he is still a skilled art thief. Booth sincerely says he holds no hard feelings towards them, but his pleas for sunblock are ignored as Hartley and Black leave. They present the eggs to an Egyptian billionaire, who in turn presents them to his daughter on her wedding night, only for her to be distracted by Ed Sheeran performing at the wedding. Interpol raids the wedding soon after and arrest the billionaire and his daughter for the theft, as well as Sheeran when he assaults an agent.

Months later, Booth confronts Hartley and Black on their yacht. He reveals that he was arrested shortly after they abandoned him in Argentina, but he escaped his prison transport and tipped Interpol off about their Cayman Islands account, leaving their assets frozen. Booth also reveals he tipped Interpol off on their location and offers to help them escape if they agree to work with him on a mission. Hartley initially refuses, but Black cajoles him into accepting. The trio then escape to the Louvre to prepare their next heist.
