Sheriff John Nix is a major antagonist in the crime drama Ozark.
He is the corrupt sheriff of the Ozarks who allows the criminal forces that dominate the region to do whatever they want to unchallenged. John is especially loyal to Heron Mills, due to an unknown debt he owes their patriarch Jacob Snell. This makes him a frequent obstacle to the Byrde family in their quest for power.
He was portrayed by Robert C. Treveiler.
Personality[]
John Nix is a rather passive man who often goes along with whatever those in power want him to do. However, even he has his limits, as he is against getting his subordinates to deal drugs.
John's final act before his death is investigating Helen Pierce's disappearance after being pushed into doing it by Mel Sattem. This tragically shows that there was a desire to be a good cop in him deep down, despite his mostly amoral behavior.
Biography[]
John Nix knew Jacob Snell since he was a young. Years later, Jacob would go on to become the drug kingpin of the Ozarks, while John would become the local Sheriff. John would remain loyal to his close friend due to an unknown favor he owed them, despite frequent pushback from the Byrdes upon their arrival in the Ozarks.
After the death of Jacob, John's loyalty would transition to Darlene, despite her far more unreasonable and demanding personality. When Darlene begged him to make his men deal drugs for her, he agreed to it with extreme reluctance. However, he took advantage of the very first opening he found to escape the deal.
After the disappearance of Helen Pierce, a private investigator named Mel Sattem (who was hired by her husband) paid John a visit, and pleaded with him to look into it. While John was initially hesitant, he ultimately gave into Mel's demands and did his job. This act of genuine police work would ultimately be fatal, as Javier Elizonndro was staying at Helen's place, and after hearing about Nix's obstructive behavior from the Byrdes earlier, he would waste no time shooting the man dead after confirming that he was in fact the sheriff of the Ozarks.
Trivia[]
- John Nix is one of only two antagonists who appear in all four seasons (the other being Darlene Snell, who outlives him by six episodes).
- John Nix became a meme in the Ozark fandom, due to seemingly being the only cop in all of the Ozarks, as his subordinates never appear on screen, and he is always at every event in the show requiring law enforcement, whether they're major or rather insignificant.
- Season 4 would address this by killing him off and replacing him with two different sheriffs.
