Captain Hollister: When we find out all we need to know from her... John Rainbird: When you give her to me. Captain Hollister: What are you going to do with her? John Rainbird: John, the friendly orderly, will come in. He will greet her, talk to her, get her to smile... John, the friendly orderly, will make her happy because he's the only one who can. And when John feels she has reached the moment of her greatest happiness, he will strike her across the bridge of the nose, breaking it explosively and sending bone fragments into her brain. It'll be quick. And he'll be looking at her face at the time. He will ''know'' her power. And when he dies, which I hope is very soon, perhaps he can take that power with him... into the other world. Captain Hollister: You are crazy!

~ John Rainbird revealing his ruthless and murderous nature to Captain Hollister.
John Rainbird is the secondary antagonist of the 1980 Stephen King novel, Firestarter and it's 1984 film adaptation as well as in the 2022 remake. He is also the main antagonist in the 2002 two-part TV-miniseries Firestarter 2: Rekindled.
He is an assassin working for Captain Hollister and his goal is to capture Charlie McGee at all costs, even if he has to kill anyone who gets in his way.
In the 1984 film, he was portrayed by the late George C. Scott, who also portrayed General Buck Turgidson in Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Smoke in Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue and Percival C. McLeach in Disney's The Rescuers Down Under.
John Rainbird is a killer in the service of Captain Hollister, the leader of The Shop. He murders Dr. Joseph Wanless when he becomes a threat to Hollister.
Later Hollister sends Rainbird to capture Andy and Charlie and to end the release of information. Rainbird successfully captures Andy and Charlie and takes on the role of pretending to be an orderly so he can get Charlie's trust, friendship, and get her to submit to the tests. He also tells her a false story that he was a POW in the Vietnam War (he was in the war, but was never captured).
Rainbird is also scared of the dark because he loses his focus.
When Charlie gets a note from Andy, she tells Rainbird about their escape. He had wanted to kill both her and Andy so he hides in the barn. He almost gets Charlie to climb the ladder to him but his plan fails when Andy enters the barn. She asks her dad if they can take Rainbird with them, but discovers the truth that Rainbird planned on killing both of them in the first place.
Rainbird tells Charlie if she comes to him then he will spare Andy's life. When Hollister enters, Rainbird kills him. Andy then influences Rainbird to jump down from the loft, breaking his leg. Rainbird then fatally shoots Andy, before trying to kill Charlie. He is then killed by Charlie and he along with the rest of the villains is burned and destroyed.
Quotes[]
“
Captain Hollister: What's to stop me from having you erased right here and now? John Rainbird: My word. I've already made certain provisions that, should I "disappear", the S.H.O.P will cease to exist within six weeks...and that, within six months, you'll stand trial over crimes serious enough to keep you behind bars for the rest of your life.

Trivia[]
In the 2022 film adaptation, unlike in the novel and its movies, Rainbird survived. He also redeemed himself at the end by saving Charlie from the Shop agents.
