John Shelby is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Ada Thorne) of the BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders. He is the younger brother of series protagonist Thomas Shelby who he helps in his criminal activities. Despite his moral failings John does have good traits such as love for and loyalty to his family.
He was portrayed by Joe Cole
In The Show[]
John almost married former prostitute Lizzie Stark but Tommy prevents this by exposing that he offered her money for sex and she accepted. Later Tommy arranged for John to marry a woman from the Lee family in order to secure peace after their youngest brother Finn was almost killed. Despite this John remained on good terms with Lizzie and was gentle and kind with her after she was almost raped.
John is seen taking part in several illegal activities such as burning down a pub to maintain the gang's reputation blowing up the empty residence of field Marshal Russel to get his brother Arthur out of prison.
When Lizzie began dating Angel Changratta John disliked it and ended up fatally stabbing him in the order. This led to Angel's father Vincente killing Tommy's wife Grace. Tommy was so outraged by this he ordered Vincente's wife be killed but John and Arthur considered her a good woman as she was their teacher in school and went against his orders to spare her.
Ultimately John was killed by Chanagratta men much to the sadness of his family.
