John Sugden is a fictional character and major anti-villain of the ITV British soap opera Emmerdale, serving as a major character in 2024 and the secondary antagonist in 2025.

John is the son of Jack Sugden and the brother of Robert, Andy and Victoria Sugden.

He is portrayed by Oliver Farnworth.

Biography[]

John Sugden was born in late-1988 to Barbara following a month-long fling with Jack Sugden earlier in the year. At the time of John's birth, Jack was residing in Italy with his two-year-old son Robert, his girlfriend Marian Rosetti, as well as Marian's baby son Nicolo. John was raised by Barbara and an unnamed step-father, who he thinks of as his real father. Jack died in February 2009 without ever knowing of John's existence.

John himself joined the army and became a trained medic. While in the Army, John was close to Aidan Moore, another man in his unit. The two were in a relationship but kept it secret from everyone else in their unit. The relationship ended when Aidan died while he and John were in Afghanistan. After this, John left the Army and refused to let anyone else get close to him. He then started living in his camper van, travelling from place to place until his arrival in the village.

Personality[]

John is a friendly and happy-go-lucky individual. However, his time in the army has changed his view on life. He suffers from a heroic complex, which ultimately causes the tragic death of Cain Dingle's son, Nate Robinson. John's intentions aren't to ever kill an individual, as presented once he shows remorse after Nate's unnecessary death. In order to repay his debt, he makes sure Nate's family remain stable and his daughter remains in belief that her father didn't abandon her, which he didn't.

John is portrayed by Oliver Farnworth, who also portrayed Andy Carver in the soap opera, Coronation Street.
John's anti-villainous characteristics share similarities alongside, Lucas Johnson.
