~ John Victor Bodine rationalizing his crimes. |
John Victor Bodine is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Underbelly". He is a pimp and serial killer who exploits underage girls and kills them if they disobey him.
He was portrayed by the late Michael K. Williams, who also portrayed Omar Little in The Wire and Allen in Life During Wartime.
Biography[]
Bodine is a pimp who manipulates preteen girls into selling their bodies by making them believe that he loves them and will marry them once they are old enough. He brands them with tattoos of dog paw prints on their lower backs to signify that he "owns" them. He also beats them mercilessly for displeasing him, although he is careful never to hit them in the face, as that would harm his business. Once they have grown "too old", Bodine sells the girls to his clients, calling it an "adoption".
Eventually, he beats one of his girls, Chantal, so severely that she dies. He then dumps her body in the Hudson River. Within six months, two more of his girls, Monique and Sandra, meet similar fates.
"Underbelly"[]
Detectives Elliot Stabler and Dani Beck of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit start investigating Bodine after finding his third victim. They take one of his girls, Belinda, into custody and promise to help her if she will testify against him, but she refuses, as by now, Bodine has brainwashed her into believing that he loves her and wants to marry her. Eventually, however, they convince her to help them after showing her what Bodine did to the three murdered girls, and Sister Peg, a nun who works with SVU, promises to take her in.
Stabler and Beck arrest Bodine, who brags to Stabler during his interrogation that they will never be able to imprison him. Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak manages to detain Bodine on prostitution and sexual abuse charges, but he escapes from jail after bribing an associate, Jason Young, to switch places with him and allow him to be released on bail.
Once he is back on the street, Bodine takes revenge against SVU by attacking Sister Peg, beating her so badly that she has to be hospitalized, and kidnapping Belinda. Stabler and Beck track Bodine down to a loft he owns, just as he is about to flee town with Belinda. He manages to get away by using her as a human shield, throwing her over a balcony to slow his pursuers down. As Stabler rescues Belinda, Beck corners Bodine as he tries to drive away. He attempts to run her over, forcing her to shoot him dead.
