John Wade, also known as the Pale Grin, and formally known as Billy Carpenter, is the main protagonist of The Happyhills Homicide video game series.
He is a clown-dressed serial killer who is setting out revenge upon all of those who harmed him in the past. He is the son of William Carpenter and Grace Carpenter, along with being archenemies of them, and Bryan Pawalski.
Appearance[]
John wore a dark blue jumpsuit and black boots. He had black hair and a grotesque face. He wore a bald smiling clown mask with red cheeks. After being burned in the fire, his face was horribly mutilated. In the sequel, he wears a red shirt and blue overalls, and his mask has withered and cracked.
Biography[]
Past[]
Billy was abused by his mother Grace during his childhood, while his father William was out fighting in the Vietnam War. When William came back home, he was oblivious to what was going on. One day, on October 31st, 1967, Billy snapped and killed his mother by pushing her down the stairs, after she yelled at him for making too much noise while he was playing Pong. This terrified William, fearing for the safety of his daughter Madison, he disowned Billy and gave him up for adoption. Seven years later, in 1974, Billy was adopted by the Wade family and given a new name, John. John's new foster dad turned out to be just as abusive as Billy's mother. On December 24th 1976, while John's foster brother Martin went out to get more beer for their dad, Mr. Wade grew impatient and told John to grab some in the fridge in the shed. John having grown tired of his foster father's abuse, grabbed a drill and killed him. He then framed his brother Martin Wade, and got away with the deed.
John worked as a janitor for Westpine High School. Due to his grotesque appearance, he was mocked and ostracized by all of his coworkers and the students at the school, with the exception of Madison, his sister. John was happy to see her again sending her gifts and keeping a photo of her in his closet. On June 30th 1982, two jocks from the Westpine High Football Team set fire to the place, initially intended as a joke that went wrong, causing John to get horrifically burned, being presumably deceased and losing his home, causing him to seek vengeance upon those who hurt him.
The Killings[]
The Happyhills Homicide[]
In "Edge of Your Seat," he started off his killing spree circa October 31st, 1983, by targeting Gordon Baker, a fellow teacher of Westpine High School, and stabbed his body 16 times. In "Spark of Joy," he broke into a girl's house and killed her by electrocuting her in the bathtub with a radio. In "Lawn Enforcement," he set a bear trap in a garden, which the gardener (another fellow Westpine High School teacher) accidentally stepped on, before being run over and shredded by John.
In "Rain of Fire," John broke into the house of Hank Wallace. He poured gasoline into a boiler, then proceeded to light a match in the shower, killing Hank by burning him to death. In "Cabin Fever", he lured a lumberjack outside of his house by breaking a bottle, and proceeded to decapitate him with a chainsaw. In "Nine Inch Nails," John goes to cargo yard and killed a security guard with a nailgun.
In "Don't Drop the Soap," John targets the jocks, Tyler and Chad, who were former students from Westpine High School. He dropped a bar of soap next to Tyler and set off the fire alarm. This caused Tyler to run out, but he slipped on the soap bar, and fatally hit his head against a bench. Chad appeared and attempts to tackle John, but was overpowered and fatally beaten to death by John, who was wearing a football helmet. In "Just Rel-Axe," he killed an office worker (who also was a Westpine High School teacher) with a fire axe. In "Number One Fan," he targeted two young girls (who are also former students of the high school that bullied him) at a haunted house attraction by attempting to decapitate them with a ceiling fan. The power, however, stopped working and John goes to fix the breakers, which caused the ride to resume and kill both of the girls. In "Lights Out," John killed a man by deflecting bullets that came from the man's gun. He took a machete and climbs into a roof and stabs another man repeatedly through a wall, killing him. In "Death From Below." John killed a fisherman with a harpoon. In "Motel Killifornia," he stabbed and killed a woman with a clothes hanger. In "Medium Rare," he goes to a restaurant and killed a chef by smashing his head against a grill and burning him with coffee.
In "Hay Fever," John targeted a man named William "Bill" Macsawyer (who has no connection to John or Westpine High School) at a farm. He stabbed the farmer with a rake, and then shredded him with a Bale Maker. In "Midnight Stalker", he stalked and followed Madison Carpenter after he left a subway station (which is where Detective Bryan Pawalski was sleeping). John corners Madison, but Pawalski appears and threatened John, who escaped.
In "No Loose Ends," John makes his way to Madison's house killing a police officer (who was Madison's bodyguard) by strangling him. He goes inside, but is ambushed by Madison. John threw a baseball bat at her, hitting Madison, who fatally fell down the stairs just like how their mother died years ago. John appears standing next to Madison's corpse, and expresses his remorse for killing her and how she was the only person that was nice to him. In "What's Up, Doc?," John goes to a hospital and impersonated a therapy clown. He pulled the plug on a comatose woman, killing her in order to alert his victim, Dr. Hawkins. John fatally electrocuted Hawkins with defibrillators. In "Metal Militia," he targeted a gang at a bar and proceeded to get into a bar fight. After stabbing and killing all the gang members with a broken bottle and pool cue, John killed their gang leader by shooting him several times with a crossbow.
Now being hunted by police in "Kill 'Em Mall," John goes into a mall and attempts to kill a janitor (who also worked at Westpine High School), which is revealed to be a decoy set by a SWAT team. John killed a SWAT officer with a mallet, tricked two other officers into fatally shooting each other, and using the corpse of one of the officers to slaughter several more SWAT officers with a gun. John the stole a van and ran over six more SWAT officers, before fatally running over the actual janitor.
In the last tape, "Meet Your Maker," after killing 59 people in his spree, he was finally confronted by detective Bryan Pawalski at the Westpine High School, which is revealed to had been abandoned and never rebuilt due to the fire. The detective shot him repeatedly, but John managed to escape.
The Happyhills Homicide 2[]
In “The Bad…”, circa October 31st, 1989, John went into hiding. After learning about a copycat killer on the news, John proceeded to mock the copycat, due to the latter leaving behind obvious evidence from a murder that the copycat committed. He decided to continue his own killing spree to prove himself that he’s better than him, along with getting revenge on Bryan Pawalski. He starts his second killing spree by killing an arcade worker with a sledgehammer, before the latter is crushed to death with a weighted mallet.
Personality[]
John is silent throughout most of the game as he callously killed each of his victims in creative and graphic ways. He preferred to remain unseen while performing these murders, though he took clear sadism in them, further shown by how he videotaped his murders. His resentment towards his victims was shown by the fact that he stabbed one of them 16 times. He only shown outward anger when writing bloody messages or faced with the detective and stated that he is "wrath" or "justice." This also shows he delusionally believes he is in the right.
Despite his hate for everybody at Westpine, he loved his sister Madison Carpenter, the only student who was kind to him. He kept a photo of her and later stalked her, then accidentally killed her for fighting back.
During the events of the second game. His personality is changed. He no longer cares about "justice" nor is he even motivated by anything related to his backstory. He just went on a killing spree just because he got annoyed how someone copied his kills, showing how petty he is and has a huge ego. After the copycat killed died, he did not stop and still went on with his villainous ways. He also no longer shows any remorse for killing Madison as John taunts the detective for failing to save her. He coldly admits he killed Madison to William and uses it manipulation tactic to make William turn against the detective. After William died, he taunts the detective that everyone around him dies and that depression will take him, showing that his only motive is no longer about revenge or justice, he just want to spite the detective. This results in the detective killing in rage however, the detective ends up becoming depressed and is heavily implied to be consumed by it, showing that John Wade has won even in death.
