John Westin is one of three overarching antagonists of the Criminal Minds episode “Broken”. He was the homophobic father of serial killer Paul Westin who beat his son mercilessly as a child for being gay.
History[]
John was a homophobic and abusive father who lost his wife when she died in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Eventually, he leaned that Paul was in love with Mitchell Ruiz, a classmate Paul knew. Out of the sadistic delusion of “saving” him, he brought him to Camp Willing. However, the camp in question, which was advertised as a conversion camp, used numerous illegal methods for their goals. One member of the camp, Isabella Grant, was a prostitute who enjoyed to sexually abuse young boys there for control. John also occasionally watched Paul have sex with Isabella, but if it didn’t work, he would have sex with Isabella in front of Paul. The last straw for Paul was when the camp drug him, force him to watch straight porn, and presumably torture him with electroshock therapy.
Angry at life, Paul started to go on dates, but because of the abuse he suffered, he kept killing the men and women he tried to date with. After murdering Michelle Bradley and Doug Warn, the BAU started to investigate the case. Knowing that he went to a conversion camp, they looked for ones on the area, where they found Camp Willing. BAU agents Jennifer Jareau and Alex Blake go the place and talk to the manager, where they also see a door which says that only one person can enter at once. After a conversation with Mitchell, he went to his father’s house for punishment.
Once there, John is shoved down the stairs and tied up to the bed where Paul was made to have sex with Isabella. To get back at him and to see if it “works also the other way around” he directs Mitchell to rape John on the bed. However, he doesnt have the strength to do it, so John takes advantage to fight Paul. Despite his best efforts, John is shot two times and Mitchell is caught in the crossfire. Paul is about to commit suicide, but Rossi brings up the Bible and convinces him to stand down.
In the end, Mitchell dies, Paul is imprisoned, and the camp, along with employees are shut down for good.
