| ~ Johness to Killua. |
Johness The Dissector is a minor antagonist of the Hunter x Hunter series, serving as a major antagonist of the Hunter Exams arc. He's a prolific and extremely strong serial killer who was imprisioned in the Trick Tower upon his arrest. Once there, he would volunteer to become an obstacle for the examinees who cross the prison during the Hunter Exam, solely so he could keep murdering more people out of his own sadism.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Tsuyoshi Koyama (who also voiced Sports Maxx in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, Vassago Cassals in Sword Art Online and Captain Ogre in Akame Ga Kill!) in the 1999 anime and by Takashi Matsuyama (who also voiced Jose Porla in Fairy Tail) in the 2011 anime. In the English versions, he was voiced by Mike Shepherd in the 1999 anime and by Joshua Tomar in the 2011 anime (who also provided the voices of Menthuthuyoupi in the same series and Zanta Claws from Eddsworld).
Appearance[]
Johness is a tall and muscular man with short shaggy blond hair, bushy eyebrows, and a mustache. He has piercing blue eyes with a slender nose. Johness wears a beige-brown shirt and olive green pants - likely prison attire in the Trick Tower. He doesn't wear shoes or any other accessories. His arms are muscular enough that the veins are visibly seen from his skin.
In the 1999 anime, Johness has brown hair, grey eyes and the uniform he wears is navy blue in the shirt and pants.
Personality[]
Johness appears to be the textbook definition of a sadist. Always founding preasure in killing and mutilating people with his bare hands and hearing their agonized screams. After he is released from prison to fight Killua, he expresses twisted happiness at the thought of being given another opportunity to kill. Johness displays arrogance in his fight with Killua.
Johness also shown some malicious glee at the thought of killing Killua, a young boy who is only 12 years old. If Killua weren't a trained assassin, Johness would have ripped him apart. Since the prisoners were offered shorter sentences for every hour they delayed the participants, it is unclear if Johness would've taken his time dissecting Killua and prolonging his death.
Biography[]
Johness was the most infamous mass murderer in Zaban City with a confirmed kill count of 146 murders. After he finally got arrested, he tore a piece of flesh from a police officer's left arm. Johness was then sentenced to 968 years of prison.
Johness and four other prisoners are momentarily released from their captivity in the Trick Tower to fight the Hunter exam candidates. The five test-takers will face off one-on-one against a prisoner. They may fight in whatever way they choose, as long as there is a way to measure victory. When the opponent concedes defeat, the winning group (the prisoners or the examinees) will receive a point. The group of test-takers - comprised of Gon, Killua, Leorio, Kurapika, and Tonpa - must get the most points (i.e. win the majority of the matches) in order to continue with the exam. The prisoners are incentivized with the prospect of earning shortened sentences. For every hour a prisoner delays the clock, their prison sentence is shortened by a year.
Four of the prisoners are released and battle against the examinees: Tonpa surrenders to the prisoner, Bendot; Gon wins against Sedokan in a game of keeping candles alight; Kurapika defeats Majtani, after some debate over his unconscious state; Leorio loses a bet to Leroute, a prisoner. The score is even for both groups. The examinees must win if they want to proceed with the Hunter Exam.
The last prisoner, Johness the Dissector, is released to face off against Killua, the last examinee. Due to the prisoner's infamous reputation as a mass murderer, Leorio expresses concern over Killua's wellbeing and attempts to convince him not to fight. Killua doesn't listen, however, and meets Johness in the center stone platform for the fight. Johness is overconfident during their battle and deigns to simply reach out to "tear [Killua] apart with [his] hands." However, Killua uses his stealth to duck under his outstretched arm and emerge unscathed. Johness's eyes widen and he clutches at his chest, which now has a gaping bloodied hole in it. Killua then turns around to face Johness, holding out a bloodstained brown sack (the fabric of Johness' shirt) and smirking. Inside the sack is Johness' still-beating heart, which palpates in a measured rhythm for a few moments before falling to a terrible silence. Johness tries to reach out to grab his heart with a shaking hand, only to fall to the ground as his eyes roll to the back of his head. Johness the Dissector doesn't stir and he is declared dead. Killua successfully secures a third win for his group and they move on past the arena, leaving Johness' corpse on the center stone platform.
Powers & Abilities[]
Johness has an incredibly powerful grip, which allows him to tear through human flesh. His immense strength often overpowers his opponents and allows him to kill them with ease. This is evidenced by his rather large kill count: 146. Johness was also known to tear his victims to pieces, rendering them bloodied mutilated corpses and earning his alias as "Johness the Dissector." He is not shown to have any Nen abilities.
Trivia[]
- His name is likely based on Jack the Ripper.
- Johness' death scene was censored in the 2011 anime, as while the manga shows Killua holding his heart in his hands, the anime instead shows him holding it wrapped in a piece of Johness' shirt.
