Villain Overview

How did I end up with a son like you, eh? You're nothing like me! You never were, and you never will be!
~ Johnny's Father expresses his disappointment towards Johnny.

Marcus, better known as Big Daddy, is the secondary antagonist of Illumination's 7th feature film Sing and a supporting character in its sequel Sing 2. He is the leader of a gang of gorilla robbers and the father of Johnny. He also has a garage that he uses as a hideout.

He was voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, who also played Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Duane Benzie in Spaced, Pete in Shaun of the Dead, Darth Chef in South Park, George Spelvin in Archer, Goran the Mutilator in American Dad!, Forrest Blackwell in the LEGO City Undercover video game series, Blind Ivan in Gravity Falls, The Fisher King in Doctor Who, the Agency Director in Rick & Morty, Kang the Conqueror in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 and Iofur Raknison in His Dark Materials.

Appearance[]

Big Daddy is a large, anthropomorphic gorilla who wears a blue shirt with darker blue jeans. During robberies, Big Daddy wears a sky blue jumpsuit, gloves, and a rabbit mask. When he and his gang are sent to jail, he wears an orange prisoner uniform.

Personality[]

As the leader of a criminal gang, Big Daddy has a strong alpha-male attitude. He frequently robs and steals banks and ships for money, loot and gold. He is particularly strict towards his son, Johnny, who he wants to follow in his footsteps. When Johnny inadvertently gets his father and the other robbers arrested, and later admits to his father that he wants to be a singer, Big Daddy selfishly disowns him. However, when he is exposed to Johnny's talent, he becomes proud of his son, and so ashamed of his prior behavior he breaks out of prison to apologize to Johnny for selfishly disowning him.

Biography[]

Sing[]

Big Daddy and henchmen Barry and Stan are introduced robbing a bank. They are interrupted by a pair of rhino officers, but successfully drive away, Johnny following after them. After successfully pulling his son into their pickup truck, Big Daddy scolds him for failing his duties as a lookout, and asks where his rabbit mask is.

Later at the garage, the robbers make plans for a massive, final heist of $25 million in gold on a docked ship. Big Daddy requests that Johnny take over Barry's usual position as their getaway driver, and critiques Johnny's driving speed that night. On the day of the heist, however, Johnny leaves his post to attend a rehearsal at the Moon Theater. He becomes stuck in traffic trying to return, which leads to the robbers' arrest.

In prison, Big Daddy meets with Johnny during visiting hours. Johnny finally confesses that he wants to be a singer, not a criminal, causing Big Daddy to shun him and selfishly disowns him, even though Johnny swears to bail him out. After the destruction of the Moon Theater, Johnny tries to visit his father again, but Big Daddy refuses to leave his cell (possibly because of his selfish act of disowning Johnny).

When Buster Moon decides to stage a concert at the theater ruins, Johnny performs "I'm Still Standing". The gorilla robbers watch it on T.V.; Big Daddy is so amazed at his son's talent. Ashamed over his actions, he breaks out of prison and evades policemen to reconcile with Johnny and apologize to him for selfishly disowning him. He arrives backstage during Mike's rendition of "My Way", and tells Johnny how proud he is of him and gives him a heartwarming hug. Police helicopters arrive, and Big Daddy takes his leave to return to prison, with Johnny promising to visit him often.

Sing 2[]

In Sing 2, it was revealed that Big Daddy and his gang became community service workers as punishment for their robbery. They served as deuteragonists when they were recruited by Johnny to help Buster Moon and his crew to guard and protect their performance from Jimmy Crystal and his security guards. During Johnny's performance, he was proud to see Johnny defeat Klaus and earns his respect. Later Big Daddy and his gang managed to overpower Jimmy Crystal's henchman, but Jimmy got away and try to kill Moon by dropping him. When Rosita manage to overcome her fear and rescue Buster, Big Daddy manage to restrain Crystal and force him to watch the rest of the show. Later after Crystal was arrested, Big Daddy was last seen riding in the truck with his gang and bids farewell to Johnny and his friends, returning to finish their community service.
