Johnny Hughes is a supporting antagonist in the 2016 BBC series Motherland.
He is the jealous and controlling ex-husband of Amanda Hughes.
He was portrayed by Terry Mynott.
Physical appearance[]
Johnny is a tall, muscular Caucasian man. He has grey hair, and traditionally wears woollen clothing.
Personality[]
Johnny is dismissive to his wife, Amanda, and is seen mostly speaking to his colleagues on the phone rather than interacting with his children, his wife, or the other parents. He is described by Amanda to have uncontrollable jealousy which leads him to behave aggressively toward Amanda, resulting in the breakdown of their marriage.

Background[]
Little is known of Johny's background, other than that he met Amanda and married her, having two children (Manus and Georgie). It is presumed he works in business which preoccupies him most of the time. He does not seem to have much of a relationship with his children. At some point, Amanda and Johnny started couples counselling.
At some point, Amanda and Johnny arrange a polyamorous agreement whereby Johnny agrees to watch Amanda sleep with a squaddie from Aldershot.
Motherland[]
Johnny is first seen in the pilot episode when Julia Johnstone arrives at a dinner planned by Amanda Hughes, his wife. Julia and the children she arrives with meet Johnny when he opens the door to them whilst he is on the phone to work, and returns to a room. Believing Johnny is showing them the way to the dinner, Julia and the children follow him in, and are aggressively yelled at and tells them to go downstairs.
Johnny is later seen by Kevin, a stay-at-home dad, who sees him and Amanda at couples counselling. Amanda reveals to Kevin the pair struggle in their marriage due to Johnny's unbridled jealousy and protectiveness of Amanda. When Johnny returns home early from work when Amanda confides in Kevin, he finds Kevin's jacket (who is hiding in the garden) and starts an aggressive argument. He resents that Amanda is "not pleased to see him" (despite her just questioning why is home early) and begins to suspect she is having an affair.
In season two, Johnny and Amanda divorce resultant from their agreement becoming public news. Johnny and Amanda become 'co-parents' during their divorce, but when Johnny begins dating younger woman Tamara, Amanda becomes envious and dejected. Johnny invites Amanda and her mother to Christmas, where he appears happier with Tamara to Amanda's chagrin. It is clear that Amanda's mother, Felicity, approves more so of Johnny and Tamara's relationship than Amanda and Johnny's.

- Interestingly, Amanda's only seen love interests are both called Johnny and Johannes, the Hebraic variant of John/Johnny.
