~ Johnny Feist confesses that his mother forced him to commit robbery. |
Johnny Feist is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Criminal Intent episode "Diamond Dogs". He is a heroin addict who robs jewelry stores and kills their owners in order to finance his addiction and that of his mother, Dede McCann.
He is portrayed by Peter Scanavino, who would later star in another Law & Order spinoff, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as Detective Dominick "Sonny" Carisi, Jr.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Johnny was born to petty criminal and heroin addict Dede McCann and an unknown father. She gave him up for adoption, and he was raised in a series of foster homes until he was a teenager, when she took him in again. She made him steal in order to finance her habit, also getting him addicted to heroin to better control him. While he loved his mother, he also resented her for turning him into an addict, and grew to hate people from happy, well-adjusted families. He also developed a penchant for self-harm in order to release his anger and self-hatred.
When Johnny reached adulthood, Dede forced him to rob jewelry stores and kill the owners so as not to leave witnesses, while she acted as his getaway driver. She also found him a girlfriend, another addict named Maya. Johnny genuinely loved Maya, oblivious to the fact that she was only with him because he supplied her with drugs.
"Diamond Dogs"[]
At Dede's command, Johnny goes on a robbery and murder spree. First, he breaks into a house in a well-to-do area and robs its occupants, Jack and Miriam Engles, stealing a gun, a laptop, and an expensive watch. He then goes to a jewelry store under the pretense of pawning a watch to get money to pay for an engagement ring, and robs it, taking several hostages before managing to escape.
As his and Dede's addictions worsen, Johnny grows angrier and more violent, killing the owner of the next store he robs because he resents their apparently picturesque family life. Detectives Mike Logan and Carolyn Barek of the NYPD's Major Case Squad investigate the murder, and quickly connect it to the Engles robbery and a fence who buys stolen goods from Feist. They eventually realize that Maya is connected to the robberies and arrest her, but Dede bails her out, posing as her mother. Dede then kills her with a lethal overdose to keep her from informing on them. Johnny is devastated, and massacres the next jewelry store he robs, killing everyone inside and inflicting particular wrath upon the owner's wife.
Logan and Barek eventually arrest Johnny for the robberies and murders, and Dede for killing Maya. While interrogating Johnny, they offer him sympathy and understanding for the suffering Dede has put him through, particularly Logan, who tells Johnny about his own mother, an abusive alcoholic, to establish a bond with him. They then tell him that Dede killed Maya. Johnny is outraged, but still cannot bring himself to turn against his mother. Logan and Barek let him see Dede going through withdrawal and tell him that her only chance to get clean is to go to prison. Knowing that Dede will die unless she stops using, Johnny makes a full confession to get 25 years to life.
