Johnathan "Johnny" Jones is a major character in the 1996 role-playing video game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its 2023 remake, simply titled Super Mario RPG.
He is the shark-like captain of the Sunken Ship and a legendary pirate who is known and feared by the residents of Seaside Town. He comes into conflict with Mario and his party after discovering a Star Piece and refusing to hand it over. However, upon being defeated Mario, Johnny gains respect for the plumber and helps him fight back against the Smithy Gang.
Biography[]
Past[]
Not much is known about Johnny Jones' past. It is hinted that he's not actually a shark, but rather some other creature wearing the skin of a shark he'd previously slain, as demonstrated by the set of eyes in his mouth and his journal entry in the remake. Regardless, Johnny grew up to be the captain of a pirate crew that regularly plundered the waters outside of Seaside Town until his crew was attacked by King Calamari, resulting in their ship sinking to the bottom of the sea.
Nevertheless, Johnny and his core crew survived, and despite the presence of ghosts and other sea creatures, continued to operate the ruins of the ship as normal. Eventually, Johnny discovered a Star Piece, which fell into the sea after the Smithy Gang destroyed Star Road. Johnny took the Star Piece and added it to his treasure collection.
Super Mario RPG[]
Eventually, Mario and his party are guided by Geno to Seaside Town, where they eventually discover the Sunken Ship. The party solves various riddles and fights off many enemies, even destroying King Calamari in the process. After defeating some of the pirates, Johnny allows them to enter his quarters. Despite the party pleading for Johnny to hand over the Star Piece, Johnny refuses, insisting that they fight him for it.
The party engage in battle against Johnny. About halfway through, Johnny becomes so impressed with Mario's skill that he challenges the plumber to a one-on-one duel. Upon accepting, the two battle each other, with Mario emerging as the victor. True to his word, Johnny hands over the Star Piece.
When the party returns to Seaside Town, they are intercepted by Speardovich, who attempts to steal the Star Piece and run off with it. However, his escape route is blocked by Johnny, who anticipated a member of the Smithy Gang arriving to interfere. Johnny forces Speardovich to battle Mario's party, at which point he's defeated, allowing the heroes to reclaim the Star Piece.
At the end of the game, Johnny is seen standing on a cliff and staring out into the sunset, reminiscing about his battle with Mario.
In the remake, Mario can challenge Johnny to a one-on-one rematch in the post-game. This battle is far more difficult than the original, but if Mario succeeds, Johnny will reward him with the Extra-Shiny Stone, which grants Mario access to a rematch against Culex.
Personality[]
Johnny Jones initially appears to be a ruthless and pirate, having garnered a reputation as a scoundrel who is feared and loathed by the population of Seaside Town. He is also quite greedy and possessive, as shown by the amount of treasure he keeps on his ship, the complex puzzles required to reach him, and his refusal to hand over the Star Piece despite the potential danger it poses.
However, during and after his battle with Mario, Johnny shows himself to have a high sense of honor, as he genuinely respects the plumber's skills and ultimately gives him the Star Piece when defeated. He also arrives to help them catch Speardovich and reclaim the Star Piece despite having no incentive to do so, proving that his honor goes beyond mere promises and extends to helping those he respects.
