“ I'm a cartoon character, not an idiot! „ ~ - Johnny Reb, "Was GENERAL SHERMAN a WAR CRIMINAL?!?!?!?!"
“ | With God as my witness, I'll NEVER BE FOOLED AGAIN! | „ |
~ Johnny Reb's promise to Billy Yank's grave |
Johnny Reb is the main antagonist of the webseries "Checkmate Lincolnites" by Atun-Shei Films. A series focused on debunking myths about the American Civil War made by Lost Cause Evangelists.
Johnny Reb is an Ex-Confederate Soldier that fought in the American Civil War and active apologist for the Confederate States of America. He often tries to make multiple claims that the South didn't fight for slavery or that the CSA wasn't truly a racist state, this is less due to racism or bigotry and more of naivety and the fear that his ancestors and friends were truly evil. As such, he serves as a major believer in the Lost Cause Myth and the arch-nemesis and frenemy of Billy Yank
He is played by Andrew Rakich, the owner of the Atun-Shei Films Youtube Channel and film company of the same name, most of his dialogue is taken from comments by Confederate Apologists that Andy often found in videos like his Gods and Generals critique.
Personality[]
Despite Johnny Reb following a narrative associated with racists, Johnny himself isn't fully racist. It seems more that he is ignorant or naïve to true American history. Johnny Reb is a firm believer in the Lost Cause Myth, claiming the Civil War wasn't at all about slavery but instead the Southern desire to be free from "Yankee tyranny".
Johnny shows clear animosity towards Northerners and Unionists like Billy Yank. Despite this he remains good friends with Billy, often being concerned for his mental and physical wellbeing as well as feeling bad after snapping at him.
Throughout each episode, Johnny has push a Pro-Confederate narrative like Black Confederates or General Sherman being a war criminal, but when he's disproven he's always eager to learn more. Due to this, he has a rocky yet present friendship with Billy Yank and the two often hang out both in and outside of their episodes. Johnny clearly enjoys Billy's company even if it doesn't always end on good terms.
While Johnny isn't technically racist, he has many (unintentionally) racist/ignorant takes, like when his view of Shay's Rebellion changed after finding out they were white or how he can have takes that go from Innocent to HITLEEER on the racist-ometer. There was also one case where he was possessed by Klaus the Nazi due to a take about homogenous communities.
Even though Johnny Reb is interested in learning history, his true knowledge of history is mostly just military history of the Civil War. He doesn't feel comfortable learning about the political landscape of the Civil War era and he is very ignorant of Southern US history before and during the Civil War. He idolizes Nathan Bedford Forrest completely oblivious to Forrest's cruelty towards Union POWs and his involvement with the Kul Klux Klan (A Terrorist Group dedicated to harassing minorities, mostly nonwhite and non-Christian minorities).
History[]
Johnny Reb made his first appearance in episode 1 of Checkmate Lincolnites, Confederate DESTROYS Yankee with FACTS and LOGIC, here Johnny Reb invited Billy Yank (Then known as Atun-Shei Films) to try and discredit him, but all he did was call Billy Yank a "soyboy" for thinking slavery was wrong. Then when Johnny made a comment on white supremacy that hit the "HITLEEEER!" level on the racist-ometer, Billy shot him.
Trivia[]
- The names Johnny Reb and Billy Yank were based off characters from the 1959 comic, The Adventures of Johnny Reb and Bill Yank a comic series focusing on two Civil War soldiers becoming close friends.
- It's unknown if Billy Yank (Or Andy at this point) killed Johnny Reb or if it was just a random Confederate in "Confederate Destroys Yankee with Facts and Logic" as Johnny is alive and well in the next episode
- The reason for Johnny still being alive is due to the success of the first Checkmate Lincolnites leading to more episodes
- It is unknown where the term Yankee comes from, it was originally used by Europeans to call American colonists, there is a theory it comes from the Cherokee word for "coward"
